Nige Jouzu no Wakagimi, Make Heroine ga Oosugiru!
Summer 2024 Prelims
Hi, I watched 4 episodes of some shows from this season*! Here’s a quick tier list:
S: Monogatari, DDDDD
A: Losing Heroines, Elusive Samurai
B: Sengoku Youko, Slime, Stepsister, Mahoaku, Wistoria, Mayonaka
C: Kimisen, Isekai Shikkaku, Shoushimin, Isekai Suicide Squad, Na Nare Hana Nare
Below are some blurbs about these shows and more. Within each section they are ordered by MAL average score at time of writing, descending.
Stuff I’m Watching
Monogatari Series: Off & Monster Season (4/?): Monogatari is back baybeeee. Almost as if it was never gone. The visuals are surprisingly fun and varied. Will it be as good as other seasons? I’d guess no, but we will find out.
Make Heroine ga Oosugiru! (4/12): Everyone in this show is so fucked up, it’s amazing. I started watching because the visuals look great, but maybe the writing is also great? The author clearly has a love for novels. I struggle to think of anything here letting me down. Maybe the storage shed scene; it feels like it was included as a trope to go along with all the other tropes the author is . . . parodying? But I’m not sure it had a point. That aside, the show is a lot of fun.
Nige Jouzu no Wakagimi (4/12): This adaptation is exquisite, except for the extended CG horse archery duel. It’s understandable, but it really sticks out. Everything else looks incredible. The OP and ED are the best of the season. Give this a try.
Tsue to Tsurugi no Wistoria (4/?): Episode 1 is a treat. Everything looks so pretty, and the Lore is intriguing enough, that I can overlook the bog standard magic and plot. I also am a fan of the main characters, so that helps. That said, the animation and writing are starting to slip, so my expectations are lowering.
Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken 3rd Season (16/24): Rimuru is making the ultimate generic isekai adventurer town and I love it. This festival arc is really gearing up to be a full 12 episodes long and I love that too. This cour is so much better than the last one.
Dead Dead Demons Dededede Destruction (ONA) (4/18): Nice and slow. Gimme those mysteries. Gimme those aliens. Gimme those girlbosses. Easily AOTS, dunno why it isn’t rated higher.
Katsute Mahou Shoujo to Aku wa Tekitai shiteita. (4/12): What a pleasant show. It’s only half-length, so it’s an easy watch. The art is so soft, and the characters are so cute. RIP mangaka.
Gimai Seikatsu (4/12): Is anime infamous for sibling romance? I was going to say yes, but I don’t like being wrong. Either way, this isn’t that (yet?). This is good. Deen dialed the pacing down, injected the animation that is there with good details, and erased CGI from their minds. It’s not fancy, but it’s unique and sweet and compelling. The perfect show to watch before bed.
Shoushimin Series (4/10): I’m torn. I appreciate the slowness and many of the deductions, but I’m not a fan of the pretentiousness and some of the logical leaps in the bike incident. I have similar feelings about Hyouka, and this really is just Hyouka but different. At least the side characters are great.
Sengoku Youko: Senma Konton-hen (4/22): It’s good!!!! The re-start is slow, but that’s not a bad thing. The first part ended up being really cool, but these 4 episodes are doing a lot of additional setup. I have faith in Mizukami.
Isekai Shikkaku (4/12): I love this man. The first 4 episodes cover the first “arc” rather well. Episode 1 was iffy, but I’m on board now. I think I prefer the manga, but the anime is fun; Sensei’s voice is great, especially his snickers.
Mayonaka Punch (4/12): Mayonaka Punch keeps surprising me. I was thinking, “what dumb video idea are they gonna do next”, but then they made a room cleaning video and I was like “hell yeah”. I also like vampires.
Kimi to Boku no Saigo no Senjou, Aruiwa Sekai ga Hajimaru Seisen Season II (4/12): I love these two dorks. The fight scenes are fun, and the romcom is silly. Episode 4 is a little scuffed though. I hope the indefinite break allows the rest of the season to be produced reasonably.
Isekai Suicide Squad (4/10): Sometimes the animation is impressive. The world is not the most well-thought-out, but it has some unique aspects. The script is often funny. Each episode has been well-paced so far. I’m enjoying this Harley, which I did not expect. So overall, I’m feeling positive.
Na Nare Hana Nare (4/12): Only the freaks at P.A. Works would make a show like this. It has a good sense for most of what makes a good anime; its only downfall is its subject. Cheer. Nobody thinks “oh, a show about cheer? That sounds good!” I too was initially put off by the 3DCG cheer routines. But as I said, most aspects of Na Nare Hana Nare are fantastic. The characters are interesting, the colors are wild, and the vertical motion is inspiring. The show succeeded at emotionally investing me in multiple plotlines so far. Just, on the whole, it’s not anything spectacular. (Personal nitpick: Miku Itou is doing the same exact voice as Yoru from last season’s Jellyfish, which is slightly off-putting.)
Stuff I Tried
"Oshi no Ko" 2nd Season (2/13): I was going to drop it after episode 1, except for the excellent cliffhanger. Then they rewound time, and spent 7 minutes without addressing the topic of the cliffhanger. I’m not falling for the good cliffhanger at the end of episode 2. You’re dead to me, ““Oshi no Ko.””
Shikanoko Nokonoko Koshitantan (2/?): The marketing and title are better than the first two episodes. The pacing is too slow, and Koshi’s tsukkomi is too often and too regular.
Kami no Tou: Ouji no Kikan (1/?): Boring. The worldbuilding is incomprehensible and the audiovisuals are average. It’d be cool seeing Bam climb the tower but I really don’t care about the new cast.
Atri: My Dear Moments (2/13): The animation can look really great, but I’m not sold by much else. Atri’s voice is grating, the world doesn’t feel solid, and I’m not a big fan of any characters.
Yozakura-san Chi no Daisakusen (16/27): The adaptation is not fixing the pacing issues. They even botched one of the coolest parts. I think I’m satisfied with what I’ve watched so far, so I’m done. I’ll probably try the next season to see how it’s going.
Ore wa Subete wo "Parry" suru: Gyaku Kanchigai no Sekai Saikyou wa Boukensha ni Naritai (4/12): It starts off strong, but after that the pace slows and the jokes repeat.
Naze Boku no Sekai wo Daremo Oboeteinai no ka? (1/12): It’s not all bad, but the writing is atrocious. I know the more I watch the more disappointed I’ll be.
Madougushi Dahliya wa Utsumukanai (1/12): It’s ok.
Bye Bye, Earth (2/10): There’s a lot to like (the main character, the setting, the show-don’t-tell), but there’s also a lot to dislike (the worldbuilding, the writing, the incomprehensibility). I do not have time to continue watching.
Boku no Tsuma wa Kanjou ga Nai (1/12): Is this the author’s fetish?
Kono Sekai wa Fukanzen Sugiru (1/13): I dropped the manga and I’m dropping this, despite how much more I enjoyed the cute ED than I did the rest of episode 1.
Stuff I Haven’t Tried
Tokidoki Bosotto Russia-go de Dereru Tonari no Alya-san: The accent for the Russian is too much. I added the manga to my reading list.
Fairy Tail: 100-nen Quest: ~it’s a sequel to a show that’s bad~
NieR:Automata Ver1.1a Part 2: ~it’s a sequel to a show I didn’t watch~
Giji Harem: idk seems cringe
Megami no Café Terrace 2nd Season: ~It’s a sequel to a show I didn’t watch~
Tasogare Out Focus: Not for me
2.5-jigen no Ririsa: I read a little bit of the manga. Very cringe.
VTuber Nandaga Haishin Kiri Wasuretara Densetsu ni Natteta: Why watch this when you can go watch a vtuber?
Senpai wa Otokonoko: idk I’m not a fan of how the animation looks
Shy 2nd Season: ~It’s a sequel to a show I didn’t watch~
Shinmai Ossan Boukensha, Saikyou Party ni Shinu hodo Kitaerarete Muteki ni Naru.: I feel like this has been done before.
Koi wa Futago de Warikirenai: idk seems cringe
Dungeon no Naka no Hito: I don’t think I would like this from a worldbuilding standpoint.
Isekai Yururi Kikou: Kosodateshinagara Boukensha Shimasu: Looks bad
Kinnikuman: Kanpeki Chоujin Shiso-hen: I don’t know what Kinnikuman is and at this point I’m afraid to ask
Ramen Akaneko: Not gonna lie, I’m only including this here so I can include Sakuna below it.
Cardfight!! Vanguard: Divinez Season 2: ~It’s a sequel to a show I didn’t watch~
Tensui no Sakuna-hime: I wanna play the game instead
> Everything else is irrelevant!
*Some shows started last season but are still airing.
