Attack on Titan Season 1 Episode 9 Review
Anime Relations:
Shingeki no Kyojin
Episode 9 of **Attack on Titan** delivers yet another thrilling chapter in the ongoing saga, combining action, emotion, and mystery. Titled "The Whereabouts of His Left Arm: Battle for Trost District, Part 5," this episode continues to unravel the complexities of both the Titans and the humans fighting them.
#### The Survey Corps in Action
The episode opens with the grim reality of the Survey Corps, a group often glorified for their bravery. It is revealed that whenever they venture into Titan territory, they suffer significant losses, with 30% of their soldiers never returning. The Survey Corps had already left before the attack on Trost, leaving the defenders to handle the overwhelming Titan threat. Despite this, it was thrilling to finally see the Survey Corps in action and learn more about their operations.
Hange Zoë makes a memorable entrance, and I can already tell I'm going to love her character. Her quirky fascination with Titans and desire to capture one for study adds an intriguing scientific angle to the story. Hange reminds me a bit of Sasha with her eccentricity, and it's refreshing to have a character who looks at Titans from a different perspective. Levi also stands out as a badass, showing a deep care for his comrades, as seen when one of his dying soldiers asks if he did good. Levi’s response, “You did enough, and I will carry on and use your strength to kill the Titans,” is a great moment that shows Levi’s commitment to his troops.
We also get a brief introduction to Petra, leaving me eager to know more about her and her role within Levi's squad. This episode does a fantastic job of introducing new characters while deepening our understanding of existing ones.
#### Eren's Transformation
The focus shifts back to Eren, who is revealed to be inside the Titan that devoured him. This sequence is chilling, with Eren surrounded by the bodies of his fallen comrades. The music during these scenes is phenomenal, enhancing the tension and drama. As Eren bursts out of the Titan that consumed him, we hear his thoughts as he slays another Titan, reinforcing his resolve to kill them all.
Eren wakes up in a courtyard surrounded by soldiers, with Mikasa and Armin by his side. The trio faces the wrath of Commander Kitz Verman, who accuses them of treason. This scene is tense, with Verman ordering cannons to be aimed at them. Eren is confused by Verman’s accusation, unsure of whether he is human or Titan. Mikasa, ever the fierce protector, draws her blades, ready to defend Eren at all costs. Her unwavering loyalty is both admirable and terrifying, showcasing her as a formidable ally.
Armin, ever the voice of reason, seeks to convince everyone of Eren’s humanity and trustworthiness. This dynamic between the trio—Eren’s confusion, Mikasa’s determination, and Armin’s diplomacy—highlights their complex relationship and their struggles to navigate this terrifying world.
#### Unanswered Questions and a Dramatic Conclusion
As the cannons fire, Eren has a flashback of his father giving him the key to their basement and injecting him with something. In a desperate move to save himself and his friends, Eren bites his hand and transforms into a partially formed Titan, blocking the cannon fire. This dramatic ending leaves me questioning how the show continues to get better and better. The more questions that are answered, the more mysteries seem to emerge, keeping viewers on the edge of their seats.
This episode earns a solid 5 out of 5 for its gripping storytelling, character development, and the intense cliffhanger that makes it impossible not to continue watching. As for Verman, he’s quickly earning a place among the show’s most disliked characters with his aggressive stance against Eren.
Overall, "The Whereabouts of His Left Arm: Battle for Trost District, Part 5" is a masterful blend of action and emotion, leaving viewers eager for the next installment. Attack on Titan continues to impress, delivering a rich narrative that expertly balances character arcs and the overarching plot. I can't wait to see where the story takes us next!
