Have a nice day! :)
btw, is the movie supposed to be watched in-between S2 and S3? I didn't see it listed as a sequel for anything on MAL, so I'm guessing it's meant to take place after all of the seasons, so I don't have to watch until I'm ready. And can just watch S3 first.

I'd describe it as Kuri's crude style attempting to portray Hieronymus Bosch.
Yeah, most of the flashing crap is unbearable. X)

Urasekai Picnic might fit, but I also don't think it's that good, and it doesn't seem all that well received either. It's most similar to the book I mentioned, Annihilation, as well as the old Russian book The Roadside Picnic, which was an influence for the popular game Stalker and the Tarkovsky film (I guess that was an adaptation, but it's a lot different). These are sometimes seen as kind of cosmic horror adjacent.
Hmm... there's probably not much to mention in terms of anime. There are some mediocre Lovecraft adaptations in anime, usually stop motion. C Danchi and Aragne are probably the closest, but I don't recommend either. You might find them interesting, but I can only suggest checking a trailer to see for yourself. They're short. A lot of series have elements like that but only encompasses a small part of it, like Berserk, for example.
Films that come to mind are Endless and the Void. I guess Triangle, but that's more of a basic Sisyphean take, I think. The former is actually a horror comedy, but it does something similar with cosmic horror as Amrita. The latter I don't remember too well and didn't care for much, but has good imagery. Maybe Mandy? That same director's Beyond the Black Rainbow might fit. Also, Color Out of Space with Cage (LOL). Stuart Gordon had a few like From Beyond.
Literature is probably your best bet. I don't remember all of the names at the moment for the newer cosmic horror authors, but some of Laird Barron's stories are decent. Maybe select Brian Evenson and probably his Dead Space novelization (I think the original game is cosmic horror, but maybe not what you're looking for). Maybe the first Annihilation book. Thomas Ligotti, perhaps. All Tomorrows is interesting for a more evolution-based take on the subject.
Maybe some others will come to mind.
