A surprisingly lovely story!
I love the gourmet genre and found this while looking for a new one.
Our premise: A young man suffering from a medical condition needs to eat constantly, but his weight is exponential and is having a severely negative effect on his health. His doctor suggests a virtual reality game where he can continually eat and not gain any weight.
Going in to this I expected a lot of fat jokes, but everyone around Min Hyuk genuinely cares about him. His doctor made a few cracks, but his physical trainer and medical team love him and want him healthy. He has a doting
...
father who loves him despite his weight, but wants him healthy and happy above all. Another lovely thing was how Min Hyuk was drawn, with gentle rounding that makes him lovable and happy looking instead of disgusting or unsightly.
Min Hyuk has had to diet continually and still can’t lose his weight, but in this game he can cook and eat whatever, he can appreciate the simple taste of bread he’s had to go without.
This manhau is also wonderful because you can imagine being in his place. As someone who struggled with food, not being able to eat much without getting sick, I hope to be alive should the day come where Athens is a real game. To try all the sweets and breads and ethnic dishes I could ever want without getting sick or gaining weight and not having to worry about wasting what I don’t like.
Overall, a great manhau to live vicariously through for those who love food but can’t appreciate it due to illness, diets, or sensory issues. I want Min Hyuk to succeed in his journey and eat all the delicious things!
