I'm aware it's based off of the light novel, but god damn, I was really looking forward to them dancing together... :(
@saabiK Same. The dance was in the LN as well, and as an LN reader, I was looking forward to it. They adapted the rest of the volume as perfectly as they could though, so I'm very satisfied. With the dance animated, the episode would've been a perfect adaptation.

17:31 oh ok so was the girl that he learned Russian for the older sister? Because it seems Alya certainly doesn't have any memories of him from before. The older sister is quite fine as well...though of course still rooting for Alya besides Yuki who's best sister right now.

19:29 oh she's pretty smart testing him using Russian to see if he's her Sa-kun lol.
Sad he did respond in Russian but he's gotta keep up the act I suppose.

Still Alya has a lot of competition. Strong competition too. One is her older sister and another is the best imouto Yuki. I like Masha. Really love her voice it fits the older sister very well. Still, she's technically the childhood friend now so...Alya doesn't have the childhood friend curse as the other girls and even has the transfer student buff. I was hoping for a childhood friend W but I guess the curse still holds strong. Despite being literally the reason he learns Russian and his first love probably I can't see her winning because she's the childhood friend. Well at least she blessed us with Kuze knowing what Alya is saying.

Overall a good episode. We got some Alya backstory and also how she and Kuze became friends. We even got a short flashback of him and why he has a different surname than Yuki. His parents divorced, and he chose his dad, while Yuki chose her mom. Simple as that.

@Rexnihilo Sah-kun is her boyfriend in Russia.

After the mad energy comedy of Yuki's introduction, we now get the calmer backstory of Masha and Alya. The anime conversion obviously very intentionally cut many smaller jokes from the manga, which I kind of regret, but I see the point behind it. At the very least the anime managed to properly explain why Alya got interested in Kuze in the first place. All too many romcom shows suffer from the "Why the hell do all amazing girls trip over themselves to get with the wet noodle ML for god-knows-which reason" syndrome.

Anyway - flashbacks over, looking forward to the starting bell of the mayhem next episode :)

@saabiK The episode would've exceeded its runtime of 24 minutes. Unless they cut some content, which I'm glad they didn't. Sheesh, I wish the anime was 25 minutes in duration. A full-minute of Kuze & Alya dancing would've blessed my eyes.

This episode wrapped volume 1 and became a start of realization that Roshidere aren't that special and novels only confirmed my fears. Welcome to beginning of various family drama, "progress", dragging, Masha bullshit and "Election arc"
. Fun banter is the best part of the series and anything else is questionable.

I liked the flashback showing how Alya and Masachika came to be friends, and it seems like Alya’s sister was his childhood friend. That explains the reaction she had after asking his given name. Masha is pretty different personality-wise from Alya, so seeing Masachika interact with her was pretty amusing lol. And man when she was comforting him in the tea shop…need that 😩not from her since she’s in high school lol, but in general, I need that fr.

Also I’m glad we learned why Masachika and his sister have different last names.
People on MAL refuse to actually enjoy watching anime.

Dun dun dun! Masha is THE russian osana najimi confirmed, and she's kinda holding back bc Alya also likes Masachika.... The drama ensues!!!!
TBH tho, I actually likes Masha X Masachika more than Alya X Masachika.

BTW, Alya is from Vladivostok, that's rare.... most of the time, when talking abt Russia, most media would only talk abt western part of the Uralsk (Moskwa, St. Petersburg, etc) or Siberia, but almost never mentioned eastern Russia (Yakutsk region, Vladivostok, etc). Omoshiro....

Edit: I just noticed sth. Suou Yuki was sickly as a child... Were they not twins afterall? Was she born prematurely? It happened in anime/LN before with Fukuzawa Yumi and Yuki from MariMite. Despite attending the same school year, the siblings are not twins and actually differs by 7 months, with Fukuzawa Yuki was conceived pretty much right after Yumi was born, as well as Fukuzawa Yuki was also born prematurely (and was also sickly as a child), hence only 7 months in age difference. Was this the same case here?

little backstories here and there. pretty typical stuff but has some nice additions to basic developments that make it more interesting. the sister seems to be a bit too interested in mc especially considering they make it sound like she has a boyfriend but i think it's pretty obvious this "sa-kun" was probably mc when he was younger based on the locket picture and the name. could be interesting to see if she's just overly friendly or if there's gonna be some rivalry there

Got some good background information in this episode with finding out that Masachika and Yuki's parents did indeed divorce and it looks like Yuki got her last name from her step dad. Also, got a reveal that Alya has a sister, Masha, whom is most likely Masachika's Russian childhood friend and I think Masha has already realized that.

I think that both Masha and Yuki will end up teasing both Alya and Masachika since they both know Alya likes him but I'm not completely sure if Masha will pull more moves of her own like she did in the tea shop (maybe that was more teasing).

I'm loving this, but man is everyones accent when speaking Russian bad lol. Although it does kinda add to the charm of the anime. Anyway I'm really glad to see some backstory on how Kuze and Alya met. And the scene where his father talks about divorce answers the question why Kuze and Yumi have different last names which I was wondering last episode. Also it's all but confirmed who the Russian girl from Kuze's childhood was.

It's ineresting that Oshi no Ko and Arya had episodes released today with a surprising number of similarities.
They both featured a character who was overworking themselves and needed a friend to show them that cooperation is key.
What I'm about to say might be controversial, but I enjoyed Arya's episode more, even thought I think Oshi no Ko's is better quality-wise.
So in the end I would rate them about the same.

(I'm not sure if this was the right forum for this comment, I just wrote it on the one I watched second.
I thought it was an interesting coincidence regardless, so I wanted to post it somewhere.)

Yuki wasn't a sick child. Quiet the contrary. We know from the novel there were only few times she was sick. That day in ep3 and somewhere in present story.

I think the dance in the OP is ballet. Not sure tho, don't know anything about dancing.

Omg the handwriting on the board in the flashback is perfect. It's exactly how they taught us to write (And I feel like I'm the only one who still writes Russian like that). Also while the pronunciation in that whole segment was awkward, the actual sentences, grammar etc. were really natural. With how much unnatural English I see in Japanese media, this is really surprising.

It is true that in Russian you can make pretty much any noun a diminutive and make it sound more "affectionate" and "cute".

22:10 Here he switched from 僕 (boku) to more rough 俺 (ore) (both meaning "I, me"), which I guess means that he's acting tough.

ALYA GET YOUR MAN FAST HE'S ABOUT TO GET STOLEN
Changing EDs every episode was completely unexpected btw, now I'm really looking forward to each one.

Kuze is smooth as hell man with Alya in that flashback, Finally a mc in a romance anime which isnt lame as hell with your various exceptions like the dude from the angel next door spoils me rotten or Izumi from Hormiya.

Alya's sister is a fun clutz, That flashback in one of the earlier episodes I assumed was Kuze and Alya as kids but after this episode that's obviously Alya's sister and she clearly remembers Kuze. I may be wrong but I swear in that scene they spoke Russian to each other which means Masha would know that Kuze knows Russian. I was curious why Kuze would hide that from her but I guess it could be a problem and lead to Alya eventually realising that Kuze knows Russian.

I just know when she realises that scene will be hilarious.

Oh god, Russian in this episode was horrible. Couldn't understand shit without subtitles. Alya VA did a better job, for sure, as expected. (meat vendor sounded very good too, though he said like 2 words lol)

Alya's sister turns out to be the Russian childhood friend of Masachika. I'm sure she did the tea-drop at the end on purpose to lure him in her home maybe :D Wonder if she'll find out he's hiding knowing Russian. Then, wonder if she'll reveal who she is, or keep it a secret and root for Alya x Masachika ship.

This is such a good refreshing story with beautiful visuals and new idea of expressing love in another language. I like white haired girls and watching this was refreshing. I hate these trashy biased people giving this bad 6.8 rating to this while that wistoria with boring mediocre story gets 9.1 rating. People should use brains to vote for anime which new comers refer to like even code geass's new season has around 7 rating which is so disappointing considering story is inline with how it should've been even though no Female lead can't compare to lelouch in anyway.

Like I said above I'm in love with it. I see there is a little debate about the dance but personally I might prefer it without the dancing so the developpement of the romance will be a bit more natural than it was in the novel knowing they already danced together and the school festival wil be their first time together on screen.

I mean I love how Masachika invites Alya at the school festival I just can't remember if it was volume 5 or 6.

So, Masha was the girl Kuze met when he was little. Are we heading towards a love triangle, or will Masha sacrifice her first love to help her sister? Either way, the story that intrigues me the most is the separation of Kuze and Yuki's parents.

Seeing Alya's past also shows me that Kuze is a good protagonist, not only because he helped her but also because he hides more than he seems.

@DragyG Same. I loved the adaptation. I found myself smiling ear to ear throughout the episode. I felt that this episode had the best adaptation out of all the three episodes. I can't give them enough credit. Although, if I think about it, that very final scene actually is an anime original. In the LN, Masachika thought there was going to be an indirect kiss with her. Which, of course wasn't the case.

The anime original is more preferable.

About the love triangle (Heavy spoiler ahead)
Roshidere is basically a romance between 2 characters but since Roshidere is a story about growing up
