God, what a good episode.

I'm really going to miss Friday Frieren :(

I loved seeing how even though Frieren has a hard time reading other people's emotions, she really makes an effort to do so; Whether it's Fern's crosier or Himmel's flashback, it's certainly impressive to see.

Serie's instinct makes all the sense in the world, it is clear that she knows about Fern's potential, however I was surprised to see that she failed Frieren and approved only Fern.

I'm afraid, there's only one episode left pi pi pi :(((((((((

I can't help but dislike that character, she simply failed them nonstop... 🥲
Fern has the right to reject her invitation... 😏
@CrazyButNot4U she failed then because none of them were worth it, aside from Frieren (she failed her out of pettines)

She passed Fern exactly because she doesn't want to hold back promising mages

None of the other mages were good enough

And don't forget that there are still people to be interviewed (Denken, Methode, Ubel, Land, Wirbel)

I don't like how the exam is just random whim/mood/bias bs. Not just this 3rd part but the 2nd was as well.
@Aapjuh it's not random

Serie's intuition is always right

She's gonna pass who deserves to become a first class mage, aside from Frieren obviously

@Marenwynn what thing are you talking about? The stare that sent Fern flying?

We don't know, but we do know that she's the living grimoire and she has way more knowledge about spells than Frieren, she's also way older and way more powerful (Frieren's Full mana only reaches her restricted mana), and frieren also said she can't defeat Serie at all in the manga.

So if Serie's mana is fluctuating but this fluctuation is even less perceptible than that of Frieren's that means she has an even greater mastery over supressing her mana than Frieren does (even though she called it a useless skill to have). This way it is implied that she has even greater strength than that she is keeping up an appearence of (in this case she is almost like a goddess when it comes to mana pool) or she has actually less power and she is just god at inflating her apparent mana and that is why it seems fluctuating (though I think it is the less likely explanation).
@Ishitateso It was NEVER said your mana can fluctuate due to trying to enlarge it, we don't even know if enlarging your mana is something possible to keep all the time like that (or if it's possible at all)

We get an explanation in the fight against Aura that your mana increases according to the time you spent training, so given the fact that Serie is MUCH older than Frieren, it's only to be expected and it makes perfect sense that her mana is much bigger

If both of them are suppressing their mana down to 10%, this means that Serie has around 10x more mana than Frieren (her restricted mana is already as big as Frieren's total mana)

You know after this episode, I really dislike Serie. She fails Frieren just out of absolute pettiness. Basically her excuse amounts to "I fail you because you think I would fail you no matter what." The overall result for the exam was fairly unsatisfying, thanks to Serie.

I don't even feel I can be happy about Fern passing cause Frieren not passing is so frustrating.
@MarchinBunny she didn't fail Frieren because Frieren thought she would fail her no matter what, lol

She failed her because Frieren hasn't become the mage she desires. She's still not a mage who sees Magic in the way Serie perceives, that's why she failed her

And Serie knows that Frieren failing or not isn't gonna affect her life at all. Unlike Fern. She would be holding a promising mage back If she failed Fern, so she doesn't do it.

Excellent episode and it finally hit me that there's only one more to go, what a journey it has been. Was nice seeing some of the characters again after the Second Test, and exploring the Third Test too which showcased more of Serie's character as a whole towards the end, with a really good meeting with her and Frieren and then Fern later when she got accepted into being a First Class Mage. Very subtle fluctuations were shown that Fern could pick up on but it does show how much she has grown over the years training with Frieren to enhance her natural abilities this much, and the limitless potential she seems to have for the future. Serie got served just a little when Fern rejected the offer for being Serie's student instead of Frieren's, but ultimately that rejection was nowhere near enough to influence Fern's selection whatsoever. Also nice seeing some other scenes like Frieren helping Fern behind the scenes with getting her staff fixed, and even the first scene of how Himmel knew Frieren and how a 'useless' spell like creating a field of flowers managed to be a key part in changing history in their world by defeating the Demon King eventually. The music again was just exceptional and the directing was class too. I'm gonna miss the passion, high standards and love that the staff has put into this project as a whole after next week's finale.

I didn't say that's the reason she failed Frieren, I said that was basically the excuse she used. Then she asked about her favorite spell as like an additional chance or rather an additional confirmation of Frieren's views.

Frieren Episode 26: PEAK.
Frieren Episode 27: Also PEAK.

This is just so beautiful, it's so interesting.
I did not expect that Frieren and Himmel backstory, it was so good /cries
Denken seeing his younger self from Richter.
Serie handling the exam on her own and instantly failing those who can't even handle her mana, and her trying to steal Fern from Frieren haha.
+I swear fight scenes in this anime is just an added bonus, I can listen to the characters talk for a whole hour and I won't even get bored lol.

Finale next week and Im not even ready to say goodbye, I hope we get a sequel announcement.

I thought Serie would've passed Frieren because as Serie herself said, it's Frieren's fault that so many test takers passed the 2nd test. So based on that, and the fact that Frieren is overqualified, that Serie would've passed her. On a similar note I think Serie was upset at how Frieren predicted she would react and Serie followed through with that to a T, probably due to Serie's own stubbornness.

While I'm happy that Fern passed, which I think was needed for the group to continue on their journey, I'm curious if anyone else will pass, especially Denken.

Incredible how Frieren accepts that she is not implied to be a first class mage, and what is important to her is the time she passed along his teammates, the magic she uses, specially from what her teacher showed her. Serie can't understand the limits that Frieren puts to herself to not have an "absolute monster" personality. 'Cause the time she was feeling some kind of emotion, changed forever in his vision to live. Doesn't care what others think of her. Wandering through the world was something she was used to, and founding someone like Himmel really hit the interruptor to the other way. Now thinks of the next generation, the human one. Fern is what she is proud of, and it will not dissapoint her. Frieren will do everything on his hand, and this applies to Stark too.
What Serie consider stupid, for someone powerful like Frieren will be gorgerous, beautiful, fantastic, etc. 'Cause that is what life wants. Something like art.
Find beautifulness in life, and you will be satisfied.

I think that was the whole point of the episode, to show that Frieren, despite appearing all powerful and almost godlike, does in fact have flaws and imperfections. I'm almost certain that this was done exactly for the purpose of showing that despite all the power Frieren has, it is herself that is holding her back and limiting her. And that is exactly what Serie saw in her.

@zamasz
I don't think that's the point at all. Serie and Frieren have very different perspectives on magic, and Serie doesn't want to accept Frieren's view in the same way she didn't want to accept Flamme's view. It's not that Frieren can't be a first class mage, it's that Serie doesn't want Frieren to be a first class mage while holding the view that she has. It's why she asks Frieren what her favorite spell is, to give her a chance to say something other than what she considers a useless spell.

If it was truly about showing Frieren's flaws then literally no one could be a first class mage. Afterall, how many of Serie's first class mages could imagine themselves defeating Frieren? Not even her first, first class mage felt capable enough to test Frieren himself.

If anything, this scene more depicts Serie's flaws in how she views what mages should be.

These two parts of the episode combine nicely because Frieren and Seria are similar, one does not understand why Fern's cane is so important to her and Seria does not understand why the magic of flowers is important to Frieren, but ultimately Frieren tries to understand it and Seria does not, this shows even more so that Seria would be Frieren if she hadn't met Himmel

Or rather, Frieren did not try to understand it, but despite the lack of understanding, she saw that it was important for Fern and did not want to force her to prove her point like Seria.

Something else I need to point out. Serie blaming Frieren for having too many passing the second test seems silly. In reality, it's Ubel that allowed more test takers to pass because she took down Sense's copy. Frieren only really took on herself along with Fern. Had Frieren not taken the test, the Frieren copy wouldn't have been there either. So Sense's clone would have been the biggest problem. Even Denken likely wouldn't have past had Ubel not been there.

I cried from beginning to end during this episode. The worst part is that I am caught up with the manga, and despite knowing everything that was about to happen, I ugly cried so much. As I've said multiple times, the anime elevates the manga from a 10 to a 12 (thanks to the music, the animation and the rythm it uses during everything). Now, about the episode itself: the first part is incredibly beautiful. Frieren notices Fern was hurt by how she treated the staff topic, so she makes a big effort to try and fix it AND also doesn't let the other mage refer to it as garbage because she kind of understands it is important to Fern. The whole part that happens in the shop, both with Denken and with Frieren, is pretty touching in different ways. We're slowly but steadily getting to know a little more about some of those mages, their ambitions, their futures and their pasts, which is great. Then, the second part, is a mix of tenderness with the double flashback about Himmel (and the fantastic payoff set with the flower magic), and also pretty hype in regards of the heights of magic that Fern might be able to reach in the future. There are also some subtle set ups in the episode that will have their payoff in the story in the future, which is also something that I appretiate a lot to witness in an animated format as a manga reader.
