As a person who read most of the chapters of this manga, I can say that it corresponded to the level I wanted for Shangri-La Frontier. While the plot may be somewhat cliche, you can say that with an animation as smooth as this one you can easily ignore it.
The only negative thing I can point out is the obvious but still hurtful last boss fight.
A very good start and I hope the next episodes can maintain the same quality.

I usually don't watch VRMMORPG animes, but this was really fun. Finally a gaming anime that doesn't insult my intelligence like most isekais that that just throws in RPG elements for the sake of lazy storytelling. Here we have Sunraku who plays trash games for a living until he comes across Shangri-La Frontier(SLF) where the possibilities are endless. He messes around with the character control options like most gamers do until he settles on being the shirtless guy with a bird mask on. For the first time Sunraku is playing a game that is absolutely flawless with no common bugs you see in most games. The monsters in SLR are no joke either as the low level monsters like goblins could easily take him out, but he takes out those monsters as he continues to level up. He eventually faces off against an area boss monster that is guarding the bridge.

I feel like this series is made for people who are passionate about video games and want to experience a challenge. They even showed the SLF's prologue that Sunraku skipped over. I'm sure is VR is the future of video games as its a little to immersive for me.

What Do You Play Games For?

I play games for enjoyment as a hobby.

Great animation and a good intro episode for sure. I read the Manga and have read a lot of the novel too, definitely one of my favourite VRMMO journeys. Looking forward to seeing it all in anime now too!

I think this may be the first video game themed anime I'm watching and so far so good. I like the gag humor and the good animation. The storyline is interesting enough so far and I'm curious if the girl that likes him is also playing this game.

The core of this anime looks like an copy of Bofuri, looks like this guy without any experience on MMORPG will "crack" the game and discover some 'bug' skills.

Starting off I was immediately impressed with how well this is animated and the music used in the intro and outro. The MC has a like-able personality who doesn't fear anything. I'm excited to see future fights in this with how well Ep. 1 was animated.

Even better. The guy is just adamantly a video game Gary Stu. No bugs (ok fine maybe a few), all skill.

Imagine taking a shot every time MC says "trash".

Overall, fun premiere though the initial premise only lasted like 10 or so minutes.
Also animation goes hard asf.

Even better than I expected. Masterful first episode. This is what anime is for: heightening the source material in ways only this medium can achieve. If the production keeps up, we're got an all-timer on our hands.

Im not gonna lie guys. I was really digging this first episode. I’m curious to see how this goes but it’s off to a great start. I got some good laughs in and I appreciate the protagonist already being a gamer. As someone who plays RPGs, it’s cool to see a series flesh out terms and concepts used in actual video games.

It's lucky that you got good animators to work on this anime. I thought this was going to be a mediocre anime because of the lesser-known studio. Thanks to the animation and compositing this anime is much more awesome. The only thing is the cinematography aspect which is a bit amateurish. Lastly, I like the opening.

trash games but why?
op vibes like OxT for Overlord.
Even dialog scenes animation goes needlessly hard. then the fights go nuts. occasional nice 3d camera too.

At the very least, I wanted to compliment how good the anime looks. Based on some of the shots they are definitely using CG for at least some backgrounds.
The panning on the hallway scene was very smooth and is something that I believe is typically avoided for 2D animation, but 3D makes that sort of shot easy.
However, it looked really good, very well blended and didn't stand out at all.

I'm curious if they are also using it for other aspect of the show, like using it to help do the art for some of the angled shots. Maybe they are even using it for some of the shading (I've seen it done before) or maybe the time saves from using it elsewhere is letting them stretch their legs on that aspect.

Either way first episode looked good. I hope they'll be able to keep it up through the season, it'd be sad if it drops off and even sadder if they didn't use good CG and instead killed themselves for a crisp first episode and then collapse the rest of the season.

EDIT:

On the content of the episode, I liked the shit-game aspect and kinda would like to see that explored more than a good game :P There is a lot of fun to be had talking about all the possibilities of how bad a game could be and showing that off. However, as long as they differentiate the good game from the hundreds of other anime with RPG elements out there, then it could still be fun.

It's already taking a bit of a fun start by having him Dark Souls deprived run the game.

Also wanted to say the part that I related with the most was when you see his shelves of him sorting the shit-games based on salvage-ability. I've watched my fair share of shit anime (way too much isekai) and I find the aspect I enjoy in them is finding the few good ideas they might have that can get my mind racing for if a good one came along that used them.

No lol. Thats just a youtuber/streamer-ism to line their pockets of their viewers because negativity attracts a bigger audience than positivity.

You absolutely do not need to play a boring game to find a game you like lol. Anime included. Dont go down that elitist rabbit hole.

Usually I never touch anything with RPG worlds, but this was recommended to me as something hillarious. And since KamiKatsu was a similar story and turned out to be a pleasant suprise, I thought I might give Shangri-La Frontier a chance too.

First of all: Good thing it isn't an Isekai. That's already half of the "RPG Isekai" flag of doom cut away. And I really liked the real world segment best! Hizutome's "review" of Faelia Chronicles Online was great!

However, it does start to worry me once he enters the world of "Shangri-La Frontier". While the min-max jokes are funny (and shockingly accurate!), the game world itself is super generic. And I'm not sure if gaming jokes can carry a show all by themselves. It just feels like I've seen it all and it will go downward from this point on.

But enough with the bad premonition. If it stops being funny, I can just drop it. For now - good premiere!

Read good intro for the start of the series. Immediately punching a women dang that caught me off gaurd. The premise is somthing I've seen a million times but never animated like this before. I really hope they can keep up this quality animation. Otherwise the love of him trying out new skills and fighting baddies right away is so genuine it was a blast to watch. Can't wait to see more of this show.

Oh my! This is actually a lot better than I thought it was going to be. I really enjoyed this, first episode. The visuals were good, the OST is decent and the character design so far is good too.

Seems a bit underrated if you ask me, can't wait until next week's episode. It's also great to hear that this is going to be a 20+ episode run too.

Looks promising. C2C seems to be doing a good job in directing for this first episode.
The use of CG animation is also seamless (it's not like Ao no Orchestra) - you can identify it is CG, but it looks natural somehow.

Regarding, Sunraku - being a dual-weilder 'beater' character is like a wilder version of Kirito from SAO. And actually, Uchida Yuuma (seiyuu) sounds kinda like Matsuoka Yoshitsugu (Kirito's seiyuu) in here, specially when he's going gungho in playing.

This might just be a nice anime for this season.

I normally hate series like this but for a first episode, this was not bad. Big part of that goes to Rakurou's personality at the start of the episode with the humor there and the visual aesthetics and production looks fantastic. A lot of well animated series so far this season which is a welcoming sight, but this looks like one of the best that's in store visually. The trailers looked good but the episode surpassed that, where Sunraku and the dumbass outfit there had a pretty cool fight with the vorpal bunny and some other monsters there which was nice. For once, I have not read the manga of a source material anime too so I'm going into this blind. I don't know what is in store and if the mileage this series has can be carried in the long run or would it turn into something generic and boring quickly as the novelties fade away but at least for a first episode, not a shabby one. Good to see Rakurou for once play a good game with the knowledge of shitty games to appreciate it even further. Sometimes, you really do need to consume good stuff to appreciate not only how great it is but also how truly terrible the others are in comparison and not let the shitty games be the bar.

The opening is catchy, works for the show and looks clean too. Not too bad.

The anime starts with a rather interesting beginning, from which anything can happen. First of all, there is my main character, whose perverted fetish towards bad toys makes him quite an entertaining character. Not much is known about him other than that he is a good player.

As soon as you try a "NOT Bad" game, it's quite nice to see that the experience you gained from bad games in Shangri-la Frontier becomes null and you experience the experience of quality games. But this is not certain because this is only part 1, there could be anything before it. The Opening is particularly good and atmospheric, I listened to it even before the anime started, and I have to say that it has a very good atmosphere. The animation is good enough, not too good, but not terrible either. Rather, this is the middle category, the osts are at a passable level. But this is still a 1st part that can successfully attract the viewer's attention and interest in what will become of this. Because the basic concept can go anywhere, it can move in any direction. But I will monitor and watch the newer parts. I can' very good english. I apologize for my poor English.

See some hype about the manga but i am waiting to see this anime to know what happens on it.
The MC seems a tryhard of shitgame and test a new triple-A RPG game.

The fight animation is really good, nice pace, nice speed, good OST.

Let see what happens next because the MC doesn't have a goal.

Love the premise of a guy who's only been beating trash games, now he's immersed in something that's actually good, with this being the setting I could see this being an anime that I really enjoy.
Introduced to a few characters, mainly getting a look at Rakurou who's our mc "Sunraku" in the game, seems like he could be quite fun, especially with his in-game choices.
Not a bad first episode, did a good job at introducing us to the premise in a way that was quite entertaining!
