To the volcano we go.

As autumn arrives, the rice fields are covered with golden ears of rice. The wind blows, causing the stalks to sway. While Sakuna rejoices, Tauemon warns that they can't let their guard down until the harvest is complete. Just then, a large earthquake strikes, and the river turns muddy, with everything seeming amiss. There are also reports of many demons heading toward the volcano, so Sakuna decides to go there. Upon reaching the base of the volcano, a voice saying I hate you, can be heard. As she turns her back on the bodies of the demons, something appears before her.

A new boss appears...

Ashigumo backstory.

The harvest, and the most painful part of the game, hulling, threshing, and polishing.

The scene of finish cooking and eating the rice was great but, I hoped making flashier Sakuna gaining power while eating rice.

That hoe is beautiful, specially the rice adorned handle.

Monstrously underrated show, this was such an great episode - sense of real stakes, emotion, tension, rice growing theory and pay off when they finally ate the rice, levelling up/ development for Sakuna partly using nods to her parents, development for Ashigumo then that silent scene with the rain at the end. Then if all that wasn't enough they leave us with a serious mystery to ponder right at the end.

I am really going to miss Sakuna Saturdays when this finishes.

Everyone's efforts in growing and harvesting the rice finally paid off. It made for a heartwarming scene where all of them were eating the rice, with Sakuna being moved to tears. =)

Along with new equipment, Sakuna did well to take on and defeat the spectre and the army of undead Ashigumo. The spectre did mention about their kind being betrayed by humans before perishing in the volcano's lava, so it does add more questions to what happened on this island in the past.

A good episode overall. I do look forward to the Kokorowa-focused episode next time.

Even just visually this episode was quite striking from the cascading lavafalls inside the mouth of the volcano (I'm not entirely sure why, but depictions of venturing inside volcanoes and volcanic landscape scenery is a random obscure desire I've harbored for a while of something I've always wanted to see more of in anime) to that rainy and misty return to the verdant green at the end when laying down the memorial gravesite and leaving ritual offerings for the deceased Ashigumo.

So many still frames when pausing I wouldn't mind using as a TV or computer screensaver to run in the background while just munching on a bowl of rice. Actually, this episode drove me to want to eat rice out in nature too, preferably in landscapes similar to the ones featured in this episode. Probably not inside the volcano itself but with it at a comfortable distance on the horizon.

But even moreso I'm looking forward to what the indications from the preview are a Kokorowa-hime-centric episode next week, since she is still my favorite character from this series and one of the best girls of the season.

A step-by-step rice harvesting guide made fun and interesting, it's the magic of Sakuna-hime.

Hmm this show absolutely increased my love for rice.

Give me some too, nom nom.

Greatly executed action sequence.

Sakuna is just like her parents. Brave and bold.
I need somebody who can love me at my worst
No, I'm not perfect, but I hope you see my worth
'Cause it's only you, nobody new, I put you first
And for you, girl, I swear I'll do the worst

If you stay forever, let me hold your hand
I can fill those places in your heart no else can
Let me show you love, oh, I don't pretend, yeah
I'll be right here, baby, you know I'll sink or swim

As Fall comes, Sakuna and the gang's rice crops are coming along fine, though disasters are around the corner.

The volcano's eruption not only meant that their fish stocks are instantly plummeted from the sulphur, but something even more sinister that Sakuna has avoided ever since of its apparitions. Too bad that now, she went back for another time, though finding demons at the same time as well, she's rather freaked out, and is bailed free thanks to Ashigumo, briefing her and Tama that the corpses of the esteemed tribe have become Specters, defiling their value that is not right to said otter enough to investigate further into the issue, leading to the boss that is the Hoshiumi Specter controlling the corpses, proving a rather mental task to defeat because of the vestiges of his tribe.

Without his help, Sakuna has to stand up on her own, though Tama assures her that her power coming from the harvest of rice, that has to be dealt first since she is the Harvest Goddess, pilfering from wheat to pure white rice for everyone to consume, their first proper meal in a while to elicit some fun, laughter and relief. As for Ashigumo, Sakuna laying down the fact that his mission is not only for himself, but to be entrusted to Sakuna and the gang, which her power becomes prevalent with the power of rice to take down the Hoshiumi Specter.

Still, the hate that stems from both demons and humans, what secrets are there to uncover going forward?

I have said this before, and will say again: this is P.A. Works's best show of the 3, and a hideously underrated show, there is simply no debate.

The game / show makes you appreciate all the hard work that is put by so many into something "simple" that we take for granted as rice, best girl Kokorowa finally showing up again next episode.

This show really succeeds at being a classic, family-friendly anime that I could recommend to anyone. Sakuna-hime also has all the makings of a great video game lead character with her sash and array of weapons.
