EVERY episode adds new concepts and confusion without explaining shit, why would anyone write something so pretentiously confusing?

yeah, it's kind of the opposite of usual anime affair that is very heavy on explanations and exposition and instead this show kind of dispenses with the idea of exposition entirely, or at least any coherent version of it, all the while it introduces more and more fantastical elements and worldbuilding, it's pretty strange, but kind of interesting maybe?

it is pretentious though for sure.

Here's my interpretation of what might be transpiring so far: this world works out like a play. Individuals are given roles that define their identities and purpose, and deviating from them means disturbing god's will of how the play should unfold. Hence, why "the girl of reason," who is obviously someone from outside the play, is being nudged by so many characters and forces within the story; they want to intentionally disrupt the holy order of the world, which they can't do themselves because of reasons.

Some rules of this world include: Swords are sorta like living beings that have to be leveled up by cutting things, treating war like a symphony and armies like orchestras, being afflicted with a curse as you are conscripted into your role by the treegodking thing, being conscripted into either a good or an evil role depending on god-knows-what, words having particular power when engraved into items and those can be altered if additional words of symbols are haphazardly written on them, and um, that's all I've got.

To me, it seems like there's a primary magic system that supercedes everything, and it is based on words and their meaning: Titles, nicknames, professions, curses, engraved spells, and hierarchies all have power over whatever or whoever they are assigned to.

I think it has a severe pacing problem. I have absolutely no issue with doing without exposition and just watching the characters LIVE in their world naturally. Understanding a world by inference is actually much more gratifying than having characters flat-out explaining everything to the viewers. But the amount of new things getting shoved on us per episode and the speed at which we move from one beat to the next is bonkers. Why are we holding hands with a character we just met? Why are particular swords so important? Above all, what I find most contradictory is that in order to be granted the title of nomad, you have to get the treekingod's permission?

Because it’s enjoyable working out how things work for yourself.

Also I really don’t think anything that we’ve been shown is necessarily that confusing, or hard to follow.

Sure there are plenty of things where we don’t know exactly why they work the way they do, like why and how are swords grown? Why do nomads have a curse?, and so on. But it doesn’t feel to me like you really need those answers to follow the plot. In one episode we see that there are kind of flower bud puppies, pops, and raven blossoms, raven like plants that take news of deaths to relatives, but I don’t need to know why their world contains such things, just that it does.

It’s all just details about how the world Belle lives in works, things that emphasises the difference between that world and ours. Probably the details about swords and nomads and curses will be more relevant than the pops or raven blossoms to the story, given what we’ve seen so far, but I’d expect to be shown how these are relevant as the show continues.

This anime performing so poorly, 6.73 as of now, isn't just a disgrace onto itself but also drags down SukaSuka (since WorldEnd franchise is heavily influenced by Bye Bye Earth LN, which predates it by more than a decade.) Even though SukaSuka anime also became a trainwreck, Chtolly's memory is too precious to be soiled by this BBE...

I feel it could be partly due to the translation. Some of the sentences might as well be gibberish.

"And this god will try many a ploy to keep reason at bay, so fiercely that it may nip reason in the bud."

For god's sake...

@Tacsk0 6.73 isn't that poor. That's pretty average.

I don't know, but the whole unique world compared to pretty much all the other fantasy/isekai anime in recent years that just use D&D or dragon quest is scratching an itch I didn't know I had, heck back on episode one I went "this doesn't feel like modern japanese fantasy, feels either '90s, earlier or is western" and lo and behold I was right.

First time posting on this whole site. Yeah I'm confused as well. Yes, over-exposition sucks but I feel that I have seen other anime do a better job while avoiding over-exposition. Not a bad show, really great concept but man am I lost. But eh, for all I know I'm slightly stoopid and too lazy to think critically *shrug*.

@northern_freeze it's definitely not you, I've seen plenty of dense anime and read sci fi tales that intentionally throw you in the deep end without explaining anything at first, and this is not really a satisfying at all-just feels like a poor adaptation (or the original work is dense and not that great either, , wasn't especially impressed with the translation of the author's Mardock Scramble).

@Tacsk0 Don't bring back my heartache, please. World's End broke it into little pieces & trampled on them. I hope this one doesn't do the same.
