Let the farming simulator begin.

Sakuna began cultivating rice based on the agricultural book left by her mother, Toyohana. After preparing the fields, growing the seedlings, and starting the planting, she struggled with the unfamiliar process of rice farming. On top of that, inadequate meals and the unrelenting difficulties of rice cultivation made Sakuna feel increasingly frustrated, to the point where she was tempted to give up and run away.

Slowly but surely Sakuna's getting the hang of things.

Now I'm really craving for some rice, nom nom.

Poor Sakuna is having some rough time with the planting. Don't give up, girl. I know it's going to be such a hard work, but it'll definitely pay off eventually.

That rice song was nice.

Sakuna is trying her best and improving her everytime.

The way they ended the episode with everyone singing that planting song together was great!

I need somebody who can love me at my worst
No, I'm not perfect, but I hope you see my worth
'Cause it's only you, nobody new, I put you first
And for you, girl, I swear I'll do the worst

If you stay forever, let me hold your hand
I can fill those places in your heart no else can
Let me show you love, oh, I don't pretend, yeah
I'll be right here, baby, you know I'll sink or swim

The game's first rice season. What a pain that was. Good memories.

The step-by-step of planting rice, and the struggles of farming. Such beauty.

this has been my favorite of the season.

things were looking really bad after that hard work for nothing but now with the help of everyone this are getting better but the work is twice harder, still the payoff will be worth it.

who would have thought Goddesses get bad backs?? Sakuna reading romance light novels was a funny detail.

Nice episode, this anime is feeling like something really unique and one of my favourites of the season.

Me seeing the 6.6 rating:

If this was Farming Life in Another world they would already be feasting on that rice. I prefer the slow grind.

One Piece episode 914 & 915 & 1027 were a mistake and 957 brought the salvation - FMmatron

A more slice of life-ish episode showing Sakuna struggling with planting rice. But also shows what Kinta and Yui can do naturally with their own talents. Now let's see what happens once the rice is grown.

For those interested in the rice planting song, here is the version from the game:

@WatchTillTandava

An entire episode was dedicated to the rice planting process and everything showed in it was unbelievably interesting and easy to understand.
Just how crazy is that? Kudos to the anime staff and the original game developers.

I'm surprised Sakuna lasted that long w/o trying to leave. They were getting on my last damn nerve, especially the one ruining all the food.

Subsistence farming - where it takes 9 people to feed 10. Except in this case they also simultaneously have to be Hunter-Gatherers in order to survive to get their first crop.

Sakuna needs to sacrifice/execute that irritating spirit-dog.

Tama is great.
Without him around Sakuna would be sulking all day.

Honestly, I'm surprised that Sakuna lasted this long before making her own attempt to escape, but I'm not surprised that very attempt was a failure. XD

Still, this was a pretty chill episode which focused heavily on how the rice is grown step by step. It's amusing to see Sakuna grimace at how much of the process requires you to get your hands and feet dirty, but eventually, she has committed to it herself to giving it a go. Same goes for the rest of the crew with the cute rice planting song at the end.

I know the score for this series is lackluster, but I don't really care for it. As long as this series is enjoyable to watch, then that's what truly matters.

Sakuna may be getting the hang of harvesting, though it'll take her quite a while to get used to it.

With help from the humans and Tama, the plot of land that's used for rice growing, fertilization is one key component of it, and it liberally means that as the goddess, Sakuna must handle it all her own, though the clumsy Tauemon is catching up on the labour part...who still has a lot of work to do by improving himself. That said, Myrthe trying her best to make Yanato food, also results in failure, though at least they tried, unlike Kinta. And with some help from Ashigumo, Sakuna plants her first sprouts of rice.

Whatever Sakuna brings back with the meat, Myrthe always burns out, and that was a rather waste of good game meat whilst settling on Tekusari dumplings. But as for the rice they're growing now, it's not nearly as quick enough to produce high-quality rice that would take years to make. Instead, Sakuna could've returned to the capital in the dead of night, and everyone at least learned some skills, as well as the rice paddy fields that Ashigumo is willing to share with them.

And if they couldn't connect together with conflict, singing a rice planting song will do to keep their motivations alive.

For now, this is easily the best of what P.A. Works has to offer, aside from Mayonaka Punch.

Honestly a bit disappointed with how they handled the scene where Sakuna tries to leave the island on the boat, in the game it was a lot more heated and emotional but here it felt a little dry.

Also a funny little detail was Yui trying to slap Kaimaru and missing whereas in the game she actually just straight up smacks him but I guess they didn't want to show child abuse in a show like this which is very much understandable.

@DMind I was just about to write this, in the game you could tell how fed up everyone was with the situation and the fighting scene was a lot more heated, Yui not only hit Kaimaru but was ready to kick his ass, she was way more mean in there, it was genuinely a bit tough to see.

This story isn't really going in the direction I expected, and I'm not sure I like any of the characters. I still like the base concept, though, so I'll give it a little longer.

i just watched episode 2 and 3 together and holy shit, i gotta say i love Sakuna, how she wants to laze around but ends up having to do the work, and she was fun to watch... but everyone else... failing at every single task for 2 episodes straight... just wow lol

but, maybe it's exactly because of how annoying they were before, the song at the end with everyone working felt amazing, i loved that bit <3

i checked a 10 minute video of the game (fights + rice treatment, and it was fun to watch, but i wonder how fun it would be to just repeat those steps 10000 times haha)

anyway, even if this wasn't my favorite so far... this is literally 1 good chara+ 1 decent pet + a bunch of annoying secondary charas... after the 3 episodes rule, i think i'll still keep watching a few more episodes at least, maybe it gets better when they actually get better at the job

The episode where the anime proved itself; A handling of the "refusal of the call" that had good suspense and tension leading up to it. Followed by the emotional reprieve of the rice planting song which served as a good transition into the next episode which I can't wait for.

This and Ramen Akaneko might just be the chill workplace slice-of-life I didn't know I wanted. Appreciated how much time they spent dealing with rice farming.

The human characters were very annoying, though. I understand that they're supposed to be endearingly bumbling and incompetent, but everyone has been completely useless, and the blacksmith (?) kid's "do nothing and blame everyone" attitude was irritating.

I hope they're just starting out bad because they're originally video game NPCs and will get better over time.

I know they're gradually making good and at the end they were singing in unison, but the humans are making it really difficult to not hate them 😬 and especially the "handicrafts" kid who doesn't do anything and just makes snide remarks
