Poor Yui deserves better.

The season is summer. The blacksmith's workshop that Kinta wanted is finally completed, and the rice cultivation is going well. However, Kinta continues to treat Yui harshly. Despite being treated coldly, Yui remains close to him, determined to stay involved. Seeing Yui’s unwavering dedication, Sakuna is convinced that it must be love. Inspired by her favorite book, Unrequited Love Story, Sakuna decides to support Yui in her efforts.

Good job Sakuna. That story came out to be pretty handy in the end xD

I need somebody who can love me at my worst
No, I'm not perfect, but I hope you see my worth
'Cause it's only you, nobody new, I put you first
And for you, girl, I swear I'll do the worst

If you stay forever, let me hold your hand
I can fill those places in your heart no else can
Let me show you love, oh, I don't pretend, yeah
I'll be right here, baby, you know I'll sink or swim

Kinta finally gets his ass going by forging metals, and Yui is being fine with that, as the rice crops are well-maintained, if not for the animal food chain almost disrupting their progress. But Sakuna finding out that Yui is being in contempt with Kinta treating her like that, she thinks that it's love between the kids enough to brandish a book about an unrequited love story to figure out what they are towards each other. But as much as Yui tries to talk to him, she is always held back, and Sakuna has to step in...and gets sidelined about the new hoe that she can use to defeat monsters. Whatever the girls are doing, it's clearly not working out, and it all has to do with a life-saving debt...that Kinta doesn't know that he saved Yui.

A veil that Yui is doing for Kinta, she suddenly goes missing one night, which creeps Kinta out that she's just trying to over-service him out of pity and empathy, to the point of love and hate. And he pays the price by following Sakuna to find the crane that leads to Yui...which is the same crane that he rescued from a temple that has it captured, which is why he had to leave the temple in secrecy. That same crane....is a Visitor, and there's no way for Yui to turn back into a human, unless there's the power of connection. And when words don't count, ations does with the comb he made for her, turning her back into a human.

Yeah, it's love between the two, that story counted just as much.

The whole group of animals appear.

I forgot about the good old "Tsuru no Ongaeshi " story, that was Kinta and Yui backstory.

The UFO turning a crane into a human kinda seemed out of place in this type of show.

I mean the turning a cran into a human would fit with the setting but not the UFO looking things.

Okay, as someone who played the game way before watching this I have to share my thoughts. There are some notable differences here. If you haven't watched the episode yet, don't read this further until you do so to avoid spoilers:

First, this reveal comes way early compared to in the game. At least, for me, I had several years of harvest time pass before getting to this plot point. It makes sense that we'd get it a little bit sooner since this show isn't punctuated with rotating between hours of action/exploration and downtime activities. Still, I would have preferred it if they held their cards close to the chest regarding Yui just a little longer.

Second, Kinta wasn't the one who forgot her request to be undisturbed while weaving. It was actually the player, controlling Sakuna. I understand why they'd choose to change it for the sake of deepening the bond between the two humans, but it bears mentioning.

As for the visitors, I recall Sakuna speaking to them, and having to bring Kinta to them to speak about Yui and his connections and feelings towards her, but I don't recall him ever being aware that Yui herself was indeed the crane.

And yes, seeing aliens suddenly show up in an action/adventure slice-of-life game was just as jarring as it is to see it now in anime form. I think the writer just wanted to put a spin on the Crane Wife tale and decided "It was aliens" was the vessel to do so.

Seeing the UFOs was one thing I wasn't expecting to see at all, but aside from that surprise, I enjoyed this episode.

It was about time that the series focused more on Kinta and Yui, where we got to learn more about them both. Yui's identity being a crane was a nice surprise, but it was that kindness from Kinta when he freed her that led to him being kicked out of the temple, so Yui always followed wherever he went.

Sakuna did well to help out when it was needed. She's not one to hold back her annoyance, which I can't blame at all for feeling like that, but she did great in helping Kinta and Yui understand each other better. =)

One good improvement was the new equipment that Kinta made for Sakuna, which not only makes farming easier, but it's also a stronger weapon in battle as well. Her thunderbolt-style attack looked visually nice, too.

wasn't prepared for this show to make me cry today haha "The Boy and the Cane"

Like others said I also thought the UFOs were a bit out of place in this show, they should have gone with some kind of divine spirit/ energy instead, or even if we just heard a voice without form that would be have worked fine.

Otherwise a very sweet story and satisfying in terms of character development, their dynamic finally makes sense and all past transgressions can be understood and forgiven. Kinta being a kind boy who saved a helpless Crane led him here.

two twists here with yui being a crane and all the UFO thing, I agree that the UFO is out of place here but hey, it's something kind of unexpected.

now, while I get were kinta is going with why he mistreat yui, still he went to far since he in the end never felt hate towards her, that is stupid. Well, I guess after this chapter kinta stops being such a brat.

UFOs aren't really that out of place in a series centered on Japanese mithology considering the fact that there are plenty of folktales and legends from Japan about mysterious ''visitors'' coming to the archipelago on board of strange and alien looking objects.
Look into the Utsuro-bune incident and the marebito if you want to learn more about this stuff.

Very touching episode. I knew Kinta probably wasn't such a bad person deep down, and he had his reasons. Yui being a crane was unexpected though

One reason is that this is a retelling of a popular Japanese folktale called "The Crane Wife". It's not a precise retelling, but it does mirror the basic structure of it.

The other reason, if I remember correctly from the game, is that one of the conditions of her getting a human form was that she couldn't tell him about it.

Much like with Okami you can't have goddesses and folktales without UFOs, Kinta has had a rough life and he didn't want Yui to be "dragged down" by him and be unhappy.

There was also a spotlight of Kaimaru and his ability to bring animals to help with the farm work.

I haven't heard of mushiokuri before. Though this is my guess, as insects tend to fly toward the light, the flame may burn and reduce them.

Speaking of UFOs, there is an original story behind UFOs.

This was a tense episode.

Although the summary is different from the original, "Kinta and Yui

There was a time when we were alone together."

They were able to depict parts that were not included in the original work.

As was the case last time, things that were out of reach in the original

I'm really grateful that this has been made possible.

The way this series is so steeped in folklore (indeed even including folklore I had no clue of the existence of prior or any knowledge of its reference by name) feels like a really special glimpse into another world.

Oh wow, what a twist. That explains a lot.

Didn't expect the girl to be a transformed human. And there are "visitor" aliens?

Why did Sakuna's scarf-thing react to them though? And where are Sakuna's parents btw? Now I suspect there's a connection.

Wow, wasnt expecting "visitor" aliens. That just came outta nowhere for a show about gods and goddesses and battling demons and cultivating rice. Lol, still a nice ep involving the two.
