Stark is my most favorite character but this arc is so engaging that I almost forget him!

My interpretation is that Frieren surpass the version of Serie from one thousand years ago. Of course I expect Serie to getting much stronger now, but her skill at one thousand years ago was already a god-like level that can create any spell.

In fact -not even close. At least combat wise
Thing is - decipher complex spells is Frieren specialty - area where her true talent shine. This is how Frieren was able to break Aura spell (feat that was impossible for 500 years)

I'm curious which is stronger Flamme's barrier or Serie's barrier, because Frieren said she is still far from her sensei in previous arc

It depends on the purpose of the barrier. Serie could cast barrier which could hold a Seven Sages of Destruction demons lvl, but here there was no need to do so

Sousou no Frieren Episode 21

  • "The pursuit of magic itself"
  • Is Serie a guy???
  • Frieren breaking the supposed to be an unbreakable barrier is so epic.
  • Old man Denken is a chad. His reason for wanting to be a first mage is to be allowed to visit his hometown's cemetery is such a noble desire. Plus, he had a fistfight and won.
  • Laufen is so pure.
  • Kanne and Lawine have a great synergy. Kanne is indeed powerful when she has access to immense water like rain.
  • Fern's spell to see through clothes is OP, it even frightened Ubel.
  • After a few episodes without him, we finally got a screen time of Stark inside a bar in the middle of the night realizing that Fern was not there to scold him made him happy, and that thought scares him.

@memori01 what do you mean if Serie is a guy lol it was explicitly said she's a woman. plus she has boobs.

Another episode of peak fantasy 🙏🏾.

So Frieren not only has met the wish granting grimoire in the past, but is actually part of her teaching tree, she taught Flamme! That’s a pretty cool reveal. Frieren turning down the chance to get any spell she wanted was so badass. Even as a young mage she was determined to chart her own path. The best part of magic is discovering your own and even back then, Flamme knew Frieren would be the one to defeat the demon lord

Could definitely tell this is a shonen with episodes like this. Lot of action and Madhouse cooked with the sakuga. Beautiful looking episode from start to finish and the storyboarding was great.

Respect for trying it, but Denken got his ass beat lmao. “She’s stronger than Denken and richter” uh duh, didn’t you hear Denken introduce her as the hero party’s mage?? Poor Laufen actually fell for the bait to try and save her party member. At least it shows how much she cares about him.

Richter had the advantage in the fight against the girls until Frieren demolished the barrier preventing water from getting in. Insane scene btw, everything about it from the colours to the OST to the look on the faces of the administrators when they saw the barrier break, chills. But Richter realising he’d fucked up was hilarious. Lawine’s water magic is so broken.

I like how Denken still not giving up on the exam tho, if they can’t get it with magic, a good old fist fight against a party down a member is always on the table lmao.

Lmao the look on Ubel’s face when Fern mentioned her spell that lets her see through clothes.. if it’s not destroying enemies, she’s perving on them, no in between 😂

And that’s the end of the first phase of the exam. Two days until phase two, can’t wait to see what happens in this one.

Poor stark at the bar coping hard without his girl. Trying to laugh thru the pain “I’ve never been happier” bro is fighting back tears he misses Fern lmao

@LS_11 frieren never said anything like that lol where did you get this idea ? why do people always love to make up stuff that was never said ?

the only thing frieren ever said was back in episode 4, she said "it seems that even after 1000 years I'm still dancing at the palm of my master's hand"

this was in the context of flamme basically being able to predict that frieren was gonna have regrets in life, it had nothing to do with powerscaling

To no one's surprise this episode was worth the cliffhangers.

I like both Frieren and Denken's characters, so I was hyped to see them clash. Since they have very similar ideals, they reinforce one another and the excitement level shoots through the roof (or Serie's barrier, in this case). In contrast to every other mage (that we've seen) in this exam, they don't have a single "signature spell"; they are two powerful mages that love discovering new ways to use magic. Consequently, they both find unique ways to approach their opponent:

  • Denken tries to ensure Frieren have no escape by creating a tonado and enhances it with fire to maximize its impact. And after she escapes, he predictes that she would have exhausted her mana and adapts his strategy, firing a barrage of fast spells.
  • Frieren, on the other hand, defeats Denken by deceiving him the same way she did Aura. She knows a powerful mage like him whould cast the appropriate spell for every situation, so she reveals her "weakness" to build up Denken's confidence and later exploits that confidence by launching a counterattack when he least expects it.

Finally, after that increadible display of skill, Frieren executes the final phase of her plan: she destroys the barrier, a move that no one whould have ever expected, in order to give an advantage to her teammate and ensure their team's victory.

In case it wasn't obvious already, I loved this episode!

When Freiren has not only surpassed her shishō, but her shishō's shishō, that is really on a whole other level. The world of magic has been turned upside-down, indeed!

The fight was less flashy than expected, but Frieren still managed to stand out by taking down the barrier.

So Serie is her legendary masters legendary master, yet she "only" founded modern human magic 50 years ago? Atleast her room is the same as 1000 years ago.

Speaking of Serie, I was not expecting her to sound like that. Japanese VAs are something else.

I already liked Denken, but brawling it out with their fists makes him even better!

Have they ever said how many people can become first class mages? Maybe its 1/3rd of those who manage the first test.

PS: I want to get head pats from Frieren

Remember that in Pokemon, water type attacks are supereffective against ground types. Once Lawine was able to harness the rain, it was over for Richter. And while Denken's fire vortex is quite the sight to behold, Frieren is just too strong to let that do her in. But as a consolation prize, Denken steals another team's Stille, so they will have another shot.

Wonderful, just such an enjoying watch So many stories/shows rejoice in showing the antagonist humiliating and hurting the mc's for no good reason (some shows do it well tho). So satisfying to see sweet Frieren just absolutely overwhelm her smug opponents and force them to pay attention.

Really like Denken though. Very likeable antagonist.

One thing I can say about this episode is how I enjoyed Denken and how he dealt with everything. He stood no chance against Frieren, but you have to commend him for giving it all he had. After dealing with him and baiting out Laufen with ease, Frieren then proceeded to destroy the barrier itself, which was beautifully animated backed by the powerful soundtrack.

Thanks to this, it gave Lawine and Kamme a fighting chance against Richter and the girls certainly went all out. Overall, I'm glad that Frieren's team passed the exam, with the same going to Fern's group as well. Despite losing to Frieren's team, Denken's team were able to pass the 1st exam stage after Denken went for the old-school fisticuffs approach on another team for their stille, which makes me like him even more! XD

This episode did also show us who Serie is. She was Flamme's master back in the past, but she wasn't impressed when Frieren didn't want to learn any spell from Serie at all. Not only that, but Flamme also called out to her master, saying that she alone couldn't kill the demon king and Frieren could, which proved to be correct. Behind that smile, I think you can tell that Serie wasn't happy that Frieren broke her barrier during the exam.

Lastly, but certainly not least, Stark finally got some screentime for the first time in a while and he was at a bar, talking about how doing whatever he wanted without any repercussions from Fern made him so giddy that it scared him. It had me laughing, that's for sure. =)

I'm happy with how this episode went. The battles were exciting, backed by how nice the animation quality was. The soundtrack was also on point throughout the whole episode and it helped made a lot of scenes even more satisfying.

This episode is pretty good, one of the best episodes since the demon arc in episodes 7-10 so yeah, I enjoyed this one. So far so good in this test arc, this is the 2nd best arc by now IMHO.

Pretty cool to see the old man battling the other mages with his fists near the end, and he started with an uppercut, nice! Mike Tyson would be proud.

Kanne and Lawine did a very good job holding their ground. Richter was very concentrated on overwhelming them both with those huge physical attacks. His magic using the earth and rocks lends itself to such strong attacks. The girls couldn't really get anything going with their combinations of ice and water without any main water source near them. Hence why Richter separated them so high up, forcing Kanne to only use defensive spells while Lawine ice couldn't do anything either. Richter explaining how magic is based around visual imagination and you have to imagine how a spell will work for it to actually work. Without that thought process of imagining what the spell will do there isn't anything specific for you to enact. Yet also keeping the spell not top complex where as your reaction time could be effected because it takes too long thinking. The barrier being broken by Frieren and the rain descending let Kanne unleash her own big physical attack with the water. Frieren defeating Denken with great ease, similar to the Fern fight we saw last episode where she just casts basic attack spells and still wins with ease. Frieren manna supply is just so overpowering that other mages don't stand a chance. Denken is a great mage but he doesn't have enough to beat Frieren. I'm glad that his party could still get the bird they needed to pass. Old man laid it down with the fists to take that bird from another defeated team. The field has been slimmed down as they move onto the second stage.

Frieren said she can't imagine defeating a mage in the rain who can manipulate water. There are times when they downplay her abilities. Like the time when they faced the dragon or when Laufen could have killed Frieren if she went for the kill the first time.

Oh wow, didn't expect Serie to have such a low voice. I expected a really high voice for some reason.
A random thought: I think Frieren and everyone else wears such simple clothes in the flashbacks with Flamme because more complex clothes simply weren't a thing back then.
5:16 Nephtear doesn't seem to be a real word (maybe it's a compound of words, idk). In Japanese it's written as 氷の矢を放つ魔法 - "Ice arrow firing magic".

Same case with Waldgose (9:26) and Daosdorg (9:29). I guess German names were limited to characters and places. In Japanese they are 竜巻を起こす魔法 - "Tornado creating magic" and 風を業火に変える魔法 - "Magic that changes wind to hellfire".

10:25 Same with Catastravia. Japanese: 裁きの光を放つ魔法 - "Magic that fires the light of judgement".

11:22 Laufen is run, walk, go. (she's the girl that was moving super fast last episode and stole Frieren's party's Stille)

12:06 I don't think that guy's name was mentioned last episode, but Richter as in Richter scale? Lol

The fact that it took Frieren, of all people, from the evening of the day before to disable the barrier makes Serie an absolutely insaaaanely powerful mage.
17:05 Reamstroha too. Japanese: 水を操る魔法 - "water controlling magic"

Frieren and her party being so badass wtffff
Denken going for a fist fight is actually so funny but also logical lmao
21:49 the smollest uwu to ever uwu

Oh damn, Denken actually won. I feel bad for that other party ngl, they looked so broken.
Stark finally showed up for a couple of seconds!!! I hope he gets at least a little bit more screen time next episode before the next test starts lol.
Damn, the animation was beautiful this episode. Loved it and the whole 1st test.
