Seems to be an unpopular opinion but I actually enjoyed this episode the most so far. The animation in the previous episodes were definitely eye-candy material and superior compared to this episode, but I still found them a bore to watch content-wise. In comparison, even with the CGI usage and all, I always enjoy watching archery competitions and while I find Sadamune and his protruding eyes disgusting, he actually seems like a pretty impressive opponent. Also, Suwa's concern about animal abuse in the dog shooting competition in the modern age was probably the first joke to amuse me in this show. Still found the other jokes too over-the-top and annoying, but better than the previous episodes overall.

The CGI... it was quite good, but comparing to the animation quality they offered to us at previous episodes, that makes this one feels really off.

Wasn't too happy with the CGI in this episode, but I understand why it was used. Just wasn't as impressed with animation and style choices as I was in earlier episodes.

Still had an enjoyable time watching it. The actor dog was super funny and I just love the kids, they are great characters. Although Tokiyuki is one weird child, lmao

All the weird eye stuff happening tho, eww xD

(Also I really wish they wouldn't try to push any romance/shipping, those children are only 8 ffs...)

The competition is going strong and the eye guy is leading with four points right now. Looks like Tokiyuki will have to put up some work against him. Can't wait to see that. The CG wasn't bad but it just didn't fit well against all the amazing animation throughout the show.

Takauji Ashikaga has the spirit of JJK's Sukuna, if anything, his multiple eyes are a menace.

Tokiyuki...is just a lost cause trying to learn swordsmanship. But while that's happening, Yorushige gets a word from Emperor Godaigo's appointed Sadamune Ogasawara that he's in control of even the Suwa clan and its territory, which his rather "perfect" eyesight managing to catch a glimpse of Tokiyuki, it's a given because he's an expert archer, who's now the governor of Shinano. Even at such a time as this, Tokiyuki being able to praise Sadamune's archery, Yorushige takes the chance to issue a challenge to him to avoid his arrows, more than his literate eye-piercing gaze.

The dog-shooting competition is a literate show affair for Sadamune who jumps in without a warrant to showcase his archery skills, though Yorushige has a hilarious 4th wall breaking moment where animal slavery of events like this are not allowed in the modern day, much less the 3DCG used on the dogs and the horseback moments. Nevertheless, Yorushige hinges all his bets on Tokiyuki (parading as Chojumaru) since he can learn a thing or 2 against Sadamune, and the latter takes the challenge head on, knowing that Sadamune will try all he can to land a hit on Tokiyuki. Moritaka's commentary only adds to the hilarity, though Sadamune eventually lands a hit on Tokiyuki, earning him 5 points.

What is Tokiyuki's strategy for the comeback?

I liked this episode, but I was hoping this conflict would wrap up this week and not be spread to two episodes. It’s fine though. This one really solidified my interest in the story as a whole. We saw Takauji again and have some actual motivations from the antagonists. And the eyeball from him. Very weird stuff. Can’t wait to see what happens.

this series is honestly rly funny to me

i can put the cgi past it for what the humour is + rest of the art is, theres some really unsettling moments like the eyes but i think thts what makes it unique from every other show this season (or dare i say most series). theres some rly awesome sakuga shots of the people that caught my eye much more than cgi horses lol
there's a meaning to that

This was the worst episode by far. The comedy as usual was insufferable with Sadamune being such an annoying, 'turn off the television' kind of villain that fits with the unfunny comedy of this series really well as well as the tonal clashes present with the setting itself. The animation was bizarre as a whole to talk about. Some shots looked pretty good and reminiscent of the first few episodes and some were expressively animated (overexpression at times to the point of looking stupid rather than cool with some of the closeups of Sadamune and Suwa's facial reactions - especially with Sadamune and his eyes). Then there was shots of Sadamune's face just moving like a panning shot with no actual movement to his face whatsoever while talking a couple of times, and then the dreadful looking CG shots of Sadamune at times in the archery stuff in the second half of the episode when riding the horse. The horses themselves weren't too bad but Sadamune looks so terribly drawn and unfitting in the backgrounds and world that the art and visuals have set standards for with its start, and even Tokiyuki didn't look great either. Legitimately felt like I was watching a slightly upgraded Kingdom season 1 visually in that scene there with its CG implementation. I don't mind CG in general being used here but as long as it can be decently implemented and not be overly distracting and clunky compared to how well-drawn the series can be in other times, or if the issues with them are only shown a couple of times max in an episode. Just jarring stuff and the tone clashes didn't help.

The animation and overall visuals really had been carrying those first couple episodes to fit the intensity of the setting well but this episode was jarring, looks very disappointing with some real flaws in the second half and the unfunny comedy is still really deep-rooted to the core of the series. There is some focus for growth with Tokiyuki to embrace real practice as an archer to have some offensive firepower to have alongside his evading and running capabilities but that is about it. Tonally, hard to take any of the antagonists seriously whatsoever, even after such a brutal coup d'etat that was shown in the first episode that should make them feel far more threatening than how I feel now.

I keeping telling this, this is one of the best shows this season and underrated one to .. u know a ep is so good that when it finishes u want to see more of it(that was the case for me),and the comedy timing is also making sense now the only flaw I will kinda have is the cgi animation but it's like a needle in the bush it can be ignored if u have such good animation and story... really looking forward to the next ep...

And one other thing is how beautiful the expression of angry, gread and other emotions are show in this anime.. it creeps u out and make u feel uneasy (it did for me) but also make u smile with a comdey scene just after not so much anime can do that..

This is one of the best ED theme that I’ve ever seen. After Kajiu no.8, the next best ED theme is this, it’s just too amazing and relaxing. It gives me Jujutsu Kaisen vibes:)

Tokiyuki has great troubles now. He is facing Sadamune in the dog-shooting competition and both of them are giving their best to win, but it seemed that Sadamune won the competition. Maybe Tokiyuki comes with a great plan and is willing to defeat him in order to get revenge.

Tokiyuki has great archery skills, if he improved him even more, he would be the best archer, even better than Sadamune and everyone. Yorishige and others are proud.

Tokiyuki wants to master archery, even though he was almost killed trying. It’s clear that while he’s great at escaping, he still has a lot to learn about fighting techniques.

The animation was bad, the use of CGI was very noticeable and felt very robotic, which shouldn’t matter, but honestly, it did. I hope it’s just this episode and the animation returns to the level of the first three episodes because, aside from the CGI, it was a good episode.

Another solid episode. Sawa was actually toned down for much of the episode so we could appreciate his cunning and strategy a little without him derailing everything with endless obnoxious jokes. It was a little odd after it being established Tokiyuki was a goof off who didn't take anything seriously that oh by the way he's actually an accomplished archer. And we already saw him behead a grown man but now he's too feeble to slice up a wood target. I'm willing to roll with it for cool archery scenes and because it'll fit his evasive style, but seemed like it abandoned its own continuity for convenience.

I like Sadamune: ruthless, skilled, and gives new meaning to the word bug-eyed. At times it got a little silly but overall I thought it was effectively off-putting. Ashikaga's own eyes within eyes when his humanity was questioned was a neat visual. I'm curious how literal we're supposed to take these inhuman features. I'd kind of wonder if they're possessed or something, but then again Tokiyuki's uncle had some pretty wild, over the top facial expressions and he was very human. Maybe it's all just style and not to be read into.

Curious to see how everything plays out in the next episode. It'd be a short show if Tokiyuki didn't rise to the occasion, but Sadamune doesn't seem like the kind of guy you can expect to live up to his end of the bargain. And if you kill him so soon after being given control of the province that'd just create suspicion and invite reprisal.

@animejas Some people need to learn to not be so fragile when there's differing opinions or if they can't there's the ignore feature. It's actually kind of funny because your posts are always thoughtful and well-written, even when I disagree with them, so these reactions feel especially over the top and out of left field. Maybe they have you mixed up with another animejas who's just being a trolling debbie downer.

Sadamune is so viscerally disturbing and ugly to look at, but he's also kind of fun to watch (just like the show itself, I guess). His voice sounds amazing when he's not screeching or being weird, and it turns out he's the Narrator from Kaguya-sama.

The storyline feels like it's coasting, when it hasn't really earned it. The animation team seems to be resting on their laurels as well. Hope the archery competition wraps up nicely next week and manages to hold my attention.

Ehh I disagree, I think the story was set up well in terms of it being an adventure, getting more allies, and training at a decent pace to fight the main antagonist. I'm not sure what you mean by "It hasn't really earned it". Animation was great overall other than the inconsistent archer fight bit but even with that the CGI wasn't bad.

@GrimLegend Yes the story was "set up," but for me, only on paper; I'm still not emotionally invested in the story, and I don't find the characters even that likable. It might be a "me problem," but I think some of the blame lies with the show, with constant interruptions from the over-the-top comedy and off-putting visuals.

The archery competition seems like a fun story bit, but it feels like it came too early. The show seems to be assuming that I'm already in love with these characters and just want to see them defeat the "villain of the week," but I was finding myself not really caring what happens to Tokiyuki.

Maybe the archery competition will conclude in an unexpected and satisfying way. Maybe the show is not a dramatic, desperate race to defeat Ashikaga, but more a slice-of-life about remaining hidden and fighting off goons. I still can't quite figure out this show, but it is fun to look at, so I'm sticking around.

The way bros nose squished in Yorishige’s nose made me burst out laughing bc of how stupid it was like this show be serious then the comedy hits out of the blue and it’s just funny yk🤣

Tokiyuki dodging a train when he has no clue and idea of what a train is is funny to me LMAO

The cgi was bad in this episode if anything it was actually pretty decent it was hard on the eyes whatsoever, good job Cloverworks🔥🙌🏽

So the emperor is never actually shown I assume, this goes with the tradition that most anime never show or even mention the emperor, at least for anime set in modern day Japan, they never talk about the current emperor...
This show is trying to be the new Kakegurui in terms of weird facial reactions or not?

@MadanielFL This applies only to the current emperor and his close relatives. Medieval emperors are shown quite openly, compare with Heike Monogatari.

// basic concept about the period //

The Japanese imperial lineage is said to be continuous, but at the very time of the Tokiyuki, the lineage of emperors was divided into two.

The system in which a reigning emperor takes refuge in Buddhism and exerts substantial control over the imperial court even after he retires from the imperial throne is called "Insei," monastery administration.
In the pre-title of episode 4, the hidden noble watching from behind the bamboo screen was Emperor Godaigo.
His great-grandfather Emperor Gosaga transferred the imperial throne to his young sons and their children (his grandchildren) one after another as he entered the Insei regime, and finally died without designating a successor. All he left behind was an order that the next emperor should be selected by the approval of the Kamakura Shogunate.

As a neutral party, the Kamakura Shogunate mediated between the two parties and had been alternating the accession of emperors belong to each. In a while, each party increased pressure on the Shogunate to quickly bring about the era of the emperor they support.

Emperor Godaigo was regarded as a short-time successor to the next generation. As his own descendants were forced to renounce the throne, Godaigo was not treated seriously by both parties to the Court. But he was a authority with ability to conceive of a rational political system and a sense of mission to save the common people by his way, while he was unable to accept the circumstances imposed on him by others. Those who he had a personal relationship through scholarship, the arts, and faith, as well as those from lower families with strong upward ambitions served him.
To gain a free hand, Emperor Godaigo set out to overthrow the Kamakura Shogunate by force. However, two coups d'état were planned, both of which failed due to tip-offs, and he lost his princes and entourage. The Shogunate, which had not punished Godaigo himself in the first coup attempt, arrested him, exiled him to an island, and declared that he would be deposed. Godaigo's hatred for the Kamakura Shogunate grew even stronger.
The remaining Imperial Court was in turmoil, and the political balance of the court deadlocked the effort toward settlement. Furthermore, the guerrilla activities of the remnants of Godaigo's party expanded from confrontations in the court to local rebellions in wide western Japan, where Godaigo himself joined them after escaping from the island.
Ashikaga Takauji was the war general of a group of warriors dispatched by the Kamakura Shogunate to suppress the rebellion. There, Takauji abandoned the Shogunate and formed an alliance with Godaigo. The shogunate collapsed at once after the defection of Takauji, a highly respected military commander.
The mastermind behind the overthrow of the Kamakura Shogunate was the person watching from the other side of that curtain.

This tale starts at this point (AD 1333).

This work is based on actual history, so events beyond this point are not spoilers, but I'd take care.

It was in such a period that Tokiyuki took action.
