That hallway chase was straight out of KareKano * . *

But, I seem to remember the MC learing Russian from the movies his grandpa was watching, but could not speak it. Or did they add the childhood friend in the LN/manga later, just brought her in early in the anime?

Ah, the classic LN high school rom-com adaptation. Lots of manzai conversations, a sarcastic self-insert protagonist and a fishing fleet-level waifu-bait. Also, it’s unusual for our age that they kept all (?) fan service. I have to admit, Sumipe, as usual, speaks excellent Russian despite her peculiar accent. It will be interesting to see how far her vocabulary will go further, although I will definitely watch this not only because of the Russian representation, but also the nostalgia for LN rom-coms in general.

FEEETTT and Sumippe are too perfect to be Alya's VA, love her cute voice.

The beginning was cute but the fact about Kuze knowing Russian made me laugh several times and cringe at the same time, this anime is just like another average romance with a cute waifu and other heroines but, hope this has a good development and a good romance that makes me like their relationship even more.

Doga Kobo wow they can make an anime with beautiful visuals in the same season and at the same broadcast time, the OP song has very beautiful visuals and the ED with Alya dance is perfect.

Its okay, pretty watchable although I feel its a bit too literal, I wonder if the "hiding my feelings in Russian" gimmick is going to start
feeling old as the eps go by, anyway W for one less Russian model off the streets trana scam me.

I'm not sure this exact reason would live up to your expectation since source material isn't bothering with exploring said representation, it could be replaced with any other language and culture, there won't do anything done with the gimmick anyway besides using language to say the lines.

@L0ken Believe me, I don't expect literal representation from this show. It's just nice to see a Russian character in the spotlight. I also like typecasting of Sumipe.

Not really sure how to feel about it, as a romance i don't think i'll like it though. I like Alya, but not a big fan of Kuze. Can't really see myself liking their romance if I don't like one of them. Also kinda bored of the trope "super pretty popular girl that everyone in the school loves for some reason gives time to the loser nerd and they fall in love", seems way too overdone. Where are the loser girls??? Need a romance with a female protag like Bocchi, only one I can think of is kimi ni todoke. I did like the opening and ending though, can't deny they both sound great. I'm gonna keep watching to see if I change my mind, but so far alls it really has for me is that I like Alya, the animation, and the op & ending.

edit: checked the vas, no wonder I recognised their voices- Alya's va also did Chisato & Hahari, and Kuze's va did Neito from my hero. Kinda cool to see two va's I recognise as the main cast, doesn't really change my opinion though

The first episode was much more enjoyable than expected. The story is very lighthearted and the story easy to follow, not taking up much effort. I personally prefer how the anime started off compared to the manga, and so far I have enjoyed it more, To me it was much easier and nicer to watch compared to the manga which was a read that required me to use more effort than i would have wished to, being more annoying to follow. Overall great start, looking forward to the rest of the episodes!

While the show is enjoyable so far (though, a bit too up front with fanservice for my liking), being a native Russian ruins it quite a bit. I'm just trying to parse what's said because I know it should be in Russian and sometimes it's really hard. Had to rewind some parts a couple of times, namely, "come up here" at around 14:28 gave me a bit of a headache.

Doga kobo never dissapointed me in quality animation.

Well, it's fun story starting on.

Let's see how it turns out. :)
I need somebody who can love me at my worst
No, I'm not perfect, but I hope you see my worth
'Cause it's only you, nobody new, I put you first
And for you, girl, I swear I'll do the worst

If you stay forever, let me hold your hand
I can fill those places in your heart no else can
Let me show you love, oh, I don't pretend, yeah
I'll be right here, baby, you know I'll sink or swim

Was looking forward to this but, so far, it's beyond cringe.

The voice actress voicing Yuki Suou is horrendous -- she sounds like my middle-aged aunt, and the Russian pronunciation and the way Alya changes her voice is awful.

Even the humor, other than the first couple of minutes when she stabs him in the ribs with her pencil, isn't funny.

Plus, long conversations about things that aren't interesting.

Will give it 2 more episodes but, if it continues in this vein, it will be an easy drop.

A shame, as it sounded/looked so much better than this.

Japanese voice actors are almost uniformly bad at English but, apparently, they're even worse at Russian :)

I don't speak more than a few words of Russian, but with the conversations I've heard a couple of Russian friends having, even my ear can hear those words are barely in the language at all.

Plus, I don't know why the director had the voice actress do that weird sounding completely different voice pitch when she's speaking (supposedly) Russian. It's really grating on the nerves, IMO.

@TwilightKiddy Before the tragic events of 2022, our language was indeed a second language in many post-Soviet countries. But now the situation is different and many countries are abandoning the Russian language, which on the one hand is good (they have their own languages), but on the other hand the common linguistic environment is lost. Russian language is not so interesting for studying, because knowing it you can familiarize yourself only with classic Russian literature, unlike English, Japanese, Spanish, knowing which you can watch movies, anime, read manga and so on. Personally, I love our language because it is very flexible. The order of words in a sentence is often not important. Each group of friends has its own slang, its own "version" of Russian. Words can be changed thanks to suffixes, prefixes and so on. But all this is quite difficult to learn, because of a lot of exceptions, rules, etc. For example, when I was at school, I always got a D grade in Russian. So a foreigner will spend a lot of effort on learning the language, but will get very little out of it. But if you have a strong desire to learn our language, of course you should try, Russian-speaking people are generally very friendly and interested in communicating with foreigners.

@WienGirl In fact, I hear the phrases Alya says in conversation quite often. And as for the voiceover, I agree, the transitions between languages are a bit jarring.

No idea if she's even pronouncing all that Russian correctly but what I do know for a fact is that it's extremely cute

Also, half-expected MC and black-haired girl's connection to be that they're cousins or something.

As a native speaker, I'd say her pronunciation is pretty much understandable, yet her intonation and articulation are all over the place. But it is indeed very cute.

I would say the first episode is a little bit, underwhelming, to me.
I come to watch this anime because Shikimori-san (both anime are from the same lineup). I would expect Roshidere to be better than Shikimori-san, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
I was thinking maybe it's just because Shikimori-san is one hell of a character, but now I've checked the first episode from both anime, it seems to be beyond character design.
The first episode of Shikimori-san not only depicted the physical ability of Shikimori-san or the bad fortune of Izumi-kun, but also the kindness of Izumi-kun and how the two were attracted to each other.
Compared to the first episode of Shikimori-san, this episode had good display of Alya's personality (as in the title, ロシア語でデレる Russia-go de Dereru) but failed to extend anything on the mental of the character. Also, Masachika was barely beyond the average good-for-nothing male character.
Moreover, I think the depiction of Alya's personality was somewhat loose and unfocused compared to that in Shikimori-san. The phone scene starting at 06:51 contributed very little to the development of the character. The copper scene and the socks scene were both focusing on her playfulness (and then デレる dereru) but this phone scene didn't. It introduced that she was a member of the Seitokai but the fact that she was a part of Seitokai wasn't really important or affected any character building in this episode (Maybe it should have though). The childhood scene at 14:14 didn't add anything to this episode either. I doubt if this childhood character would appear in the first one third of the anime at all.

Well, that's said, I do enjoy this episode.

As a long time Roshidere enjoyer I can tell you that if you be patient enough you will see who are Masachika, Yuki and Alya.

The first episode of the anime follows the 3 first chapters of the first volume which were goofy but yes a bit light about characters.

In short and without spoil if you need to be convinced.

Masachika is the best actor
Yuki is just like a coin
Alya is touching

Just watched the first episode. Everything was fine until Alya started using Russian phrases. I'm a native Russian speaker. To be honest, the voiceover in Russian is very mediocre, the pronunciation seemed more or less normal to me, but the intonation was just terrible. Intonation was like when you voice the text in Google Translator. I really respect the authors and the voice actress, but for a Russian-speaking viewer the transition from Japanese to Russian is very rough and not natural. So I will continue to watch the anime not in the original, but in Russian dubbing) I would like to ask those who do not speak Russian how do you like the Russian language of the main character? Do you find it cute? Or strange?

The visuals and animation are amazing. Obviously the target audience of this show is for guys, and Alya is indeed very pretty, but I still wish they would at least give a less generic design to the male MC as well. Well, at least he's not a total loser. Anyways, it was a surprisingly decent start although I remember dropping the manga after a few chapters. I'll probably continue watching solely for the visuals since I doubt it'd have an actual good storyline. I just hope this hiding-her-feelings-in-Russian gimmick doesn't last the entire season and it doesn't turn into some kind of harem show.

@Amphi0n92 Native here. She does not sound natural, her phrasing and word choices seems more like the kind of speech I've seen the some older Russian novels, and as you said, intonation is all over the place.
But I think it is okay. She lives in Japan and probably only speaks Russian with her family at home, so it's only natural her Russian sounds so different from the language you'd hear from someone who lives in the country where it is native. That said, I think her Russian is pretty cute.
Uesaka Sumire is very passionate about this language, so I believe she'll give her best in this role.

After the end of the "Urusei Yatsura" reboot, I'm very happy that at least Lum's voice will be preserved in the summer season.

And Uesaka Sumire does such a good job. She just sounds too cute. As a non-Russian speaker, I can't say whether the intonation is right or not, but as @George_Summers says, you can tell how much the language is close to her heart. I think she's a very good choice for Alya.

In the scene where she's chased through school, you could also hear a little bit of Lum in her voice😅

Here in Germany, Russian was/is also the second foreign language in many East German schools for a while, as Russia was the liberating force there after World War II. At the school I went to (West Germany), Russian was also offered as a foreign language, but as fewer and fewer students were interested in it, it was eventually discontinued before my time and only French and Latin were offered. So we had a lots of Russian-teachers in my school, who couldn't teach the language they studied anymore. ( If it had still been around in my time, I would definitely have chosen it).

Alya herself also grew on me straight away. After the synopsis, I thought she was some kind of ice-cold princess, but the way she always whispers in Russian and thus releases her feelings as an outlet and also the thing with the panty flash simply make her more approachable.

MC also relatable. Until the dolls anime watch and then discuss the work afterwards in the middle of the night - you know how it is.^^

I'm already looking forward to the next Wednesdays with Alya! Big things are coming our way.

Never heard of this one before I heard about it coming out this summer, and seeing that it’s very hyped up and I love romcoms, I couldn’t miss it, and I’m happy to be here because this was quite the banger of a first episode. OP and ED both by Alya’s VA Sumire Uesaka are fun and great jams. And I wasn’t sure if the Russian is great or not since I don’t speak it and don’t really ever hear it, but seeing that Sumire Uesaka has a lot of interest in Russia I imagine she’s doing a great job, and I’ve heard her voice acting so much yet never knew that about her because I just now read her bio on MAL lol, and that was because the running scene reminded me of the Urusei Yatsura remake’s Lum voice, and what do you know lol, might be about time I’ve added her to my favorites.

And the episode itself was a lot of fun, really enjoyed the moments between Kuze and Alya, I can see the dynamic that he knows what Alya is saying in Russian making for some great bits, it already did in this first episode, also i heavily relate to staying on calls talking about anime that Kuze mentioned, something I do with a buddy at least once a week, also these anime posts I can’t stop doing lol. Tho one thing that’s universal and has no language barrier is the socks scene, that was an entire feast, Kuze certainly witnessed the promised land and it’s not California this time. And because of that Kuze apparently developed a legs fetish, I can’t blame the guy honestly, also the choice of “baps” in the subs was great lol, I use that often but this is the first time I’ve seen it used. And there’s also Suou, she’s cute like Alya but a different kind of cute, and speaking of cute Doga Kobo made sure that these girls look as cute as possible, the show looks great in general.

And there’s also the mystery of who the girl Kuze met as a kid is, she had blonde hair but it’s gotta be Alya right lol, perhaps it ain’t quite that obvious tho, that would be nice. But with that I’m excited to see the rest of this show during the Doga Kobo wombo combo Wednesdays this season, hope they can juggle both of these shows.

I like the character design. It's made by Doga Kobo studio, so it is expected from them.
So we have three characters that speaks and understand Russian! And one of them is the sister of Alisa!
I want to know her more! And I hope Kuze joins student council... I can see some dynamic type of mindgames like Kaguya-sama...
Looking forward for next episode... I was waiting for good romcoms these past seasons!
See you next week!
