Synopsis

Maomao, an apothecary's daughter, has been plucked from her peaceful life and sold to the lowest echelons of the imperial court. Now merely a maid, Maomao settles into her new mundane life and hides her extensive knowledge of medicine in order to avoid any unwanted attention.

Not long after Maomao's arrival, the emperor's infant children inexplicably begin to experience grave symptoms—almost as if a curse has been cast. The curious Maomao easily solves the mystery and, to remain out of the limelight, attempts to leave an anonymous tip. Unfortunately, the dashing and perceptive eunuch Jinshi sees through it and manages to single her out.

In recognition of her talent, Maomao is promoted to lady-in-waiting for the emperor's favorite concubine, Gyokuyou. As Maomao continues to remedy the numerous ailments afflicting the imperial court, her pharmaceutical expertise quickly proves indispensable.

Pretty decent. Story starts off with a dark event but it's handled pretty tastefully as it later gets resolved. The main motive behind the story, the end goal is still unknown even at the end of episode 24 but you'll love to watch Maomao go through the events of the anime. The story has enough mystery to hook you in and when you get invested in the characters it reveals little by little there past, and everything in the show is very good, heartwrenching at times but good. Characters are written pretty good and though a little more anime like they do have their weight to ...

Mixed Feelings
It is a bit inconsistent with how they deliver the mystery to you (the audience member). You won’t always have the tools to solve the mystery or the laid out foundation. Other times it’s really spoonfed to you. Most of the time however it is great and if you rewind you’ll find you missed important details.

There isn’t a real overarching plot throughout the show and there’s a pretty big lack of urgency/threat for the main character even tho they have been painting a bullseye on their back. It feels more like a villain of the week show.

If that’s the type of show you like then ...

UPDATED VERSION (7/8/2024)

Kusuriya no Hitorigoto, also known as The Apothecary Diaries, is an anime that passed under the shadow of Sousou no Frieren due to the gigantic popularity that the latter achieved during its time; but, despite this, it achieved some fame and renown in the community for its ideas and change in an ocean of isekai anime, shounen and action flicks with exhilarating battles. It is without a doubt that The Apothecary Diaries drank a lot from the fame of Sousou no Frieren because of the demographic to which these two shows are addressed and because of certain similarities in some ...
