Plastic Memories

Eighteen-year-old Tsukasa Mizugaki has failed his college entrance exams, but after pulling some strings, he manages to land a job at the Sion Artificial Intelligence Corporation. SAI Corp is responsible for the creation of "Giftias"—highly advanced androids which are almost indiscernible from normal humans. However, unlike humans, Giftias have a maximum lifespan of 81,920 hours, or around nine years and four months. Terminal Service One, the station Tsukasa was assigned to, is responsible for collecting Giftias that have met their expiration date, before they lose their memories and become hostile.

Promptly after joining Terminal Service One, Tsukasa is partnered with a beautiful Giftia named Isla. She is a Terminal Service veteran and considered the best in Giftia retrievals, contrary to her petite figure and placid nature. Time is fleeting though, and Tsukasa must come to terms with his feelings for Isla before her time is up. No matter how much someone desires it, nothing lasts forever.

One of those shows where you wish you could rewatch it again for the first time. If you think you can handle emotional endings, not this one. Genuinely can’t think of a more underrated anime than this, I think it’s an essential watch for anyone that has gone through loss or is wanting to take that massive step in their life, but is scared of losing. Super unique story, endearing characters, good animation.

I will say though, there are some goofier episodes lumped in after very serious ones, so if you are looking for a fully serious romance anime this may not be the one ... for you. It’s more of a romcom at times, but let me tell you, the serious moments HIT; and they hit HARD.

Mentally prepare yourself for this one, and maybe have some funny slice of life anime set up for after you finish this. I don’t know how I’ll recover lol. 11/10 couldn’t recommend more !!

Mixed Feelings

Have you ever watched something you really would think you should enjoy, but it just wasn't quite that amazing?
Something that has all the hallmarks of amazing romance animes, but when combined feels mediocre and doesn't hit you in the feels like you would expect?

For me, that would be Plastic Memories.

Plastic Memories is an anime I wanted to really enjoy, but just couldn't. It has the emotional hallmarks of remarkable animes, but it never quite gets to the point where it is perfectly enjoyable to watch and is thus underwhelming.

Here's a list of problems I have come across with this show, and then I will ... list them out; The beginning of the anime goes by extremely slowly and the romance did not have enough time to grow, the anime did not focus on the acquisition of giftia and the owner's sorrow nearly as much after the first few episodes, poor comedy, dumb melodrama, milquetoast feeling scenes.

1. Extremely slow beginning and the romance did not have enough time to grow:
The beginning of this anime has very little growth for the two main protagonists. If you are looking for the romance, then you don't necessarily get it until after episode 6, and even then it does not actually come into full effect until episode 10 or so. This is magnified by the show's complete lack of full characterization for Isla, where they do not even try to reveal their personality until halfway through the series. All of these lead to an underwhelming completion for this anime, which is quite upsetting since I believe this has a bunch of potential to be amazing.

2. The anime didn't focus on the acquisition of giftia and the owner's sorrow nearly as much after the first few episodes:
This is the part where emotion really ruled supreme, and the anime could've used it to show characterization for these characters. What the anime does instead is use it as comic relief for the characters more than actually showing the characters growing together from these experiences. Lost potential is the fairest assessment here.

3. Poor comedy (Somewhat subjective):
Comedy here feels forced, with most of it being tied to romance and jealousy from Michiru, or an accidental walk in on a vulnerable moment cliché, neither is funny and/or enjoyable for the most part.

4. Melodrama:
The melodrama here is mainly Michiru being in love with Tsukasa, or related to Isla not wanting to open up and be friends with Tsukasa. Both of these are mainly just annoying, or obnoxious. Both kinda seem like a waste of time, and artificially extends this anime's duration.

5. Milquetoast feeling scenes:
What I mean by this is, scenes that are meant to be emotional and important, but end up more or less not really getting to the point of hitting the feels, some may actually be emotional, but many are not and don't feel quite the same sense of urgency or emotion.

6. Plot holes:
Why doesn't Tsukasa immediately live with Isla if it is part of the job? Why are these androids just meant to go insane at the 9-year mark? Why can't they save the data and re-upload it into either a new and improved body, or take out the data and do a complete upgrade to the android, then put the data back in? None of this is fully explained, and some of these are just plot devices, so it comes across as being shallow.

7/10; All in all, it isn't a bad watch, but it definitely had a lot more potential than this.

I went into this anime with the expectation that one of two things would happen: Either it emotionally destroys me, or I'm massively underwhelmed and unimpressed.

So what went wrong with this anime? Why the low ranking? Because like most anime it tried to hard be "funny". My main example of this is in an early episode where right after a very emotional scene we then cut to the main two characters in the car, and our android girl fully admits that she can not hold her bladder for much longer. Why? >> Not only is the moment ruined BUT WHY DO ANDROIDS EVEN HAVE TO ... DRINK AND PEE TO BEGIN WITH?

Why is our main android love interest such a silly klutz and overall just a derp of tropes? Can't blame her for "being an android" in this case because she is literally the ONLY character that acts like she does.

The series came and went. I had to drag through it finishing it for the sake of finishing it. I felt next to nothing for the main couple (again because of the "silly anime humor") and even when the expected ending ended as expected...It was not emotional enough for me.

I give it a sloppy "they tried". At least it's pretty? But that's about it.
