Little Busters!
|
-These two anime feel like a whole genre (which is not surprising since the story was co-written by the same guy): [School setting] + [comedy -> mystery -> drama -> tragedy progression] + [side character arcs]
Differences:
-Little Busters certainly has less sparkly animation/visuals, so the simple humour isn't as enjoyable as in Angel Beats. The beginning feels dry for the same reason, but:
If you can endure (or even fully enjoy) the comedy and slow pacing, you'll be rewarded with a far more sincere, subtle and fleshed out mystery section that leads to a finale that's as powerful as it is carefully woven in.
The story arcs of the supporting characters are less dramatic (compared to Angel Beats), but they are often much more touching, as the lack of dramatisation feels more human.
###
-It's the only anime I'd really say with confidence: it gets better as it goes along (every third of the 36 episodes is a noticeable step up; from 5 to 8.5 for me). This is also partly because the anime hides a lot of themes that you only understand later or on re-watching, while it has little to offer if there's nothing to build on beforehand.
[Skip last two episodes if you dislike mandatory happy endings.]

They both face personal and societal challenges while pursuing their dreams, whether it's mastering the craft of magical tools or becoming a Silver Sugar Master.
What adds an extra layer of intrigue is how both Dahlia and Anne find themselves in competition with, or needing to put in their place, male characters like Jonas and Tobias. These men, whether as rivals or obstacles, challenge the protagonists' resolve and push them to prove their worth. Watching Dahlia and Anne assert themselves, not just in their craft but also in their relationships, brings a satisfying mix of tension, empowerment, and growth.
If you're drawn to tales of resilience, creativity, and self-discovery in magical settings, where the heroines must outshine or outsmart those who underestimate them, you'll find plenty to love in both "Dahlia in Bloom" and "Sugar Apple Fairy Tale."

Asobi Asobase
|
Nichijou uses it's budget into crazy reaction sequences that make them standout to anything else in the Slice of Life genre, Asobi Asobase similarly has the voice cast completely strain their voices which gives a similar effect which is used althrough out the show.
In both it completely contrasts the original scenario, which gives both of the anime a distinct feel.

Bai Yao Pu
|
They aren't that similar, but they both have an episodic or short arc format where the focus is on the plight of some side character. The story of the side character gets wrapped up and you feel good at the end (or you are crying). They both have MCs who outwardly show some unheroic character flaws like greed, minor abuse, but are deep down good people. Gintama is a lot more goofy while Bai Yao Pu is very serious. The side characters of Gintama mostly stick around in future arcs but mostly disappear in Bai Yao Pu.

Bai Yao Pu
|
There are similarities in the story structure and topics, though there are also substantial differences. It shows you the story behind the suffering of different yokai each arc, and this is handled by the mysterious powerful MC. But the tone of Mononoke is a lot more horrifying, and Bai Yao Pu is a lot more humane in that MC generally cures the yaoguai instead of vanquishing them like Mononoke. Nevertheless, in both the focus is on the yokai/yaoguai themselves rather than on the MC, and you get to see the story of how they came to be that way.
If you like the concept of Mononoke but don't like the disturbing tone and visuals, try Bai Yao Pu. If you like Bai Yao Pu and want to see something more art-house insane, try Mononoke.

Perfect Blue
|
Both "Perfect Blue" and "Serial Experiments Lain" are psychological anime from the late 90s that have garnered a bit of a cult following both inside the anime community and a bit in broader culture as well. Some similarities include:
-both deal with a female protagonist losing her grip on reality
-both are ahead of their time in addressing the dangers posed by the internet & social media
-similar art styles
-some rather unorthodox and avant-garde storytelling techniques used in both
-somewhat confusing yet satisfying endings
"Serial Experiments Lain" is more sci-fi centered while "Perfect Blue" is more psychotic and mentally oriented with more violence & sexuality. Still both are very influential animes and well worth checking out.
