A halfway decent take on an RPG genre. At least there aren't many overdone hackneyed elements like yelling names of all the spells while casting them, or getting super flustered and having nosebleeds around attractive women. It does have a few tropes like a main character oblivious of the affections of a long time (hot) friend. Also the MC powered up a little too quickly in just a couple episodes and became an ultra competent adventurer for some reason as a low level monster after 20 years of a daily struggle to succeed as a human.

The story is decent enough for the first season ... but unless they rein it in going forward it could quickly devolve into tired OP MC cliches.

This starts off with a relatively promising premise in a quasi-DnD world, but pretty much immediately pivots to a contrived love story. I don't know why so much anime insists on portraying otherwise relatively competent adults as the emotional equivalent of young teens when it comes to romance. I guess we're supposed to believe that adventurers who've been on countless quests slaying fearsome monsters managed to never even so much as kiss another sentient being in all the traveling they've done.

So the story basically turns into a woman who had a crush on the protagonist from their previous adventures deciding to insert herself fully ... into his life by moving in with him and joining his business, rather than doing something normal like asking for a date. And of course neither one of them talks about their feelings directly, content to just blush and act awkwardly around each other whenever a hint of attraction arises.

The fight scenes aren't given much effort either, where you see one power move that immediately brings down the opponent. The scenes feel like they were placed there begrudgingly because some semblance of story needed to be advanced, before we quickly return to the protagonists refusing to handle attraction like adults.

The art is decent and the inherent talent skills concept in the DnD setting are a vague move in a novel direction in terms of RPGs, but otherwise this doesn't separate itself from so many tired cliches.

It seems that the story is disjointed because they're trying to compress the manga into a 50 minute movie. There's no development of the characters and we can't understand their motivations at all. Why does Betty fall in love with the male lead and marry him within 3 minutes of their first meeting? Why does he immediately cheat on his "beloved" wife other than his being a stereotypical 80s dude? Even on the plot level nothing really makes sense. People are fighting each other because of... reasons?

This is interesting as a historical look at the art of its time, but not for anything else.

It's basically a harem anime disguised as an overpowered main character story. It hits so many boring tropes, like characters shouting out the names of spells or techniques in the middle of battles, and mixes that with 2 dimensional characters, or at least characters who seemingly have an interesting background but immediately become 2 dimensional. This is especially true of the female characters. For example, you have powerful fighters who are immensely skilled martial artists, which takes strong will and mental toughness to achieve. Yet not long after meeting the main character they're reduced to mewling automatons quivering at the mere thought of being close ... to Dark Schneider. Softcore porn has better fleshed out characters. Also, the stupid names don't really help sell this either, with Dark Schneider being the absolute worst because of how many times someone yells his name.

The art's pretty solid and some of the music is ok, but otherwise this is trite garbage.

I've never played the games, so they have no bearing on this review.

The only good thing about this film was the art style. The detail in the monsters was good, and the fight scenes are relatively easy to see (as opposed to lots of flashing lights constantly covering the screen).

Everything else was cliched and/or boring. The characters aren't fleshed out, and the choices they make often make no sense. After spending a brief time in a parallel world, Haru suddenly decides that murdering the world's counterpart will save the girl he likes in his world, and is completely convinced by this.

Beyond the ... 2-D characters making no sense, the story never explains how the parallel world works. OK, Yu can walk in the alt world, but suddenly both boys know how to outfight monsters and fighters? Plus the fights aren't even well done. The end boss gets taken down by a 20-foot leap in the air, where he stands there gaping for several seconds and gets stabbed in the head rather than either swinging his sword or taking one step to his left.

Basically this feels like a bunch of D&D tropes got slapped on forgettable characters with a cliched story of saving a princess. It was nice to look at but otherwise I wish I hadn't wasted my time.

This started off with a lot of potential, in that it seemed to be a standard D&D manga that subverted expectations right off the bat. The first dungeon crawl goes sideways, which is immediately engaging. However, this turns out to be the peak of the manga, and everything goes downhill from there.

The world-building seems expansive at first, but we quickly discover that it's limited to this one town and a handful of characters. The main characters we follow are completely one-dimensional. The goblin slayer himself literally never removes his helmet, even when out experiencing a festival, or even when eating and drinking (does he shove ... food through the slits in his face plate?).

There's zero development of either characters or story, and without the halfway decent art (that unfortunately tends to get a bit muddled during fight scenes) and somewhat creative fighting, this would be completely without merit.

Give this one a miss.

The writing is pretty bad, but about what you'd expect from a manga for middle schoolers. The story revolves around a goblin who's max level (99) for a generic RPG, and so she can kill most everything without breaking a sweat. It's got too many tropes like a sex-obsessed demon who wants to hook up with "senpai" and the writing is too bad for this to be interesting. It sometimes breaks the 4th wall, but given the writing this comes off more as lame attempts as humor than anything else.

Skip ... this one unless you're a tween obsessed with RPGs in general.

I only made it through 5-6 episodes. Pretty generic monster fighting anime where the characters use the tired trope of yelling out which mystical power fighting move they're using before they use it. The characters and story are boring. They fall back on the tropes of destined hero who quickly learns to tap into a mystical power and becomes proficient at it way too quickly. Within a day of learning of its existence Jojo is already using many different Harmon techniques. And the villain has no motivation beyond "I'm evil and I'm going to be evil to everyone." So of course without any sort of ... real emotion between hero and villain the story has to fall back on "Look at this cool technique!" It could all be replaced with Naruto jutsus and nothing would feel any different.

The setting is a bit novel, and art is decent enough, but it's no where near enough to save this. It's not terrible, but being terrible would almost make it better, because at least it would be campy or ridiculous or something. As it stands, this doesn't stand out from the crowd in any meaningful way.

edit Nov 2019: I tried watching this again and it's hot garbage. Why does anyone like this shit? The characters suck, the writing is wooden, and the story is boring. This is one of the worst shows I've ever seen.
