This is the first review I have written. I'm not a particular weeb who obsesses over minor details, but I generally give ratings compared to other shows I have watched and attempted to justify the numbers in this review.
Story - 7.5/10
A nerdy kid Uesugi with a rough backstory takes on a tutoring job of 5 quintuplets so he can help repay family debts and guarantee a happy life for his little sister Raiha. But these quintuplets hate studying and so originally spite Uesugi as he is encouraging them to do something they don't want to do. However, overtime they all grow affection over him and come to terms that he is a capable tutor who can get them to pass high school.
You can see the story unfold with each character showing significant development personally and professionally which is great compared to many animes which has some 'side-characters' that dont deserve to be pushed to the side. I believe this has a good story that is easy to follow through, however you could predict what happens next at certain points which makes the anime less spontaneous in some way. I could predict quite a few plot points and found some predictions quite conventional or absurd, but this doesn't change my overall rating by much.
Character - 9/10
Uesugi has significant plot armour on his side, with a deep backstory that is powerful for showing his motives for becoming a tutor, showing no perverted intent. The five identical quintuplets, Nino, Ichika, Itsuki, Yotsuba and Miku all have significant backstories where the character development is spread-out amongst all 5 characters pretty evenly which is great. All the quintuplets have different quirks and interests which prevents the anime from getting boring in my opinion. You'd think that because the plot is directed on Uesugi and the quintuplets that other characters would be side-lined but this isn't the case. You see developments in both of their family histories alongside their school lives and some other classmates.
Sound - 5/10
Some of the soundtracks used throughout the scenes in season one can be quite questionable. Usually I am never all that fussed about it but when I look back at some of the scenes it just feels like some random soundtrack was thrown in to replace the silence but it doesn't exactly fit the scene. I felt like I had to go back to some scenes as I realised the sound never gave me any particular spark while watching the story unfold unlike many other animes.
The openings and endings are not too bad. I wouldn't go as far to say they are some great songs, but it depends on the taste of the specific user. I am quite adventurous with the music I listen to, as a common J-Pop enjoyer, I'd say the openings are a tad above average but not by far with a catchy opening.
Art - 6/10
I dont review artstyles unless I feel like it changes my review rating as I am not a good critique for art, nor am I particularly picky about it compared to many weebs. I will say that the S1 artstyle and animation is significantly worse than S2; the second season generally has greater video definition and pays more attention to detail so that has been taken into account on this occasion.
Enjoyment/Audience-Appeal:
I can see that a selection of anime fans may not appreciate how Uesugi has some perverted traits, or that they all have affection which makes this a harem plot. Some nerds out there may also find that this is some fantasy. It is quite unclear as to why Uesugi is generally disliked at the start other than him being a nerd so some nerd fans may not appreciate the character development as much for the main character.
In summary, I like animes which have good character development, parts of the show that make me laugh and tell a good story with a good opening which this anime succeeds in for me personally. A good anime for those who are into quirky romcoms!
