True Beauty is a webtoon that received both an anime and a K-drama adaptation. I will go through all of them one by one.
If you read the webtoon, you know it was good at first, but it got worse over time. So much so because the main character, Jugyeong, is unbearable. Suho is okay, and the only one who is well-developed is Seojun.
If you haven't seen the K-drama, DO IT. Because it doesn’t delve into university life, and the actors were chosen so well. There's a reference to Extraordinary You, and besides all that, apart from the typical scenes where the protagonists “knew each other
...
since childhood” (I hate those moments) and the cringe scenes, almost everything present there is well done, developed, and shown.
Is that true? Yes, okey dokey yo.
The anime… So, I love the fact that there's a fictional (I think) metal band from which I can’t wait to listen to the full song. It’s amazing.
Otherwise, I recommend K-drama. I'm serious.
What should have been presented at the beginning is the backstory of Jugyeong, a girl who was labeled as “ugly” just because, well, she doesn’t have a perfect appearance and, because of this, was a victim of bullying to the point where she didn't want to exist anymore. It turned into “Don’t feel sorry for her or empathize with her, we don’t have time for long explanations. You’ll figure it out.” Then it shows how she starts life at a new high school, now being beautiful thanks to the makeup she learned to apply. How? Well, after receiving a response on a forum with a link to Selena’s channel, the makeup goddess, she started watching the videos and learned to create a perfect beautiful face mask. This reality is sad and true, considering we all hide behind masks or insecurities, but forget to accept ourselves first. Anyway… Unfortunately, nothing is conveyed properly because everything in the episode and all the details are too rushed. Or almost all the scenes—let’s be serious, when Suho or Seojun appear, the atmosphere somehow calms down a bit and they remain cool no matter where they are presented. I forgot to mention that Jugyeong loves metal music and horror comics, and that’s only because these things are labeled as ugly just like her. Oh, wait… you won’t realize why because no one will explain anything to you. Here, no one has development, let’s just move the story forward. Yay!
Otherwise, if I knew nothing about True Beauty, the only thing that would keep me watching it is… what I said about that band that’s always playing in the background and the curiosity to find out who Seojun is and what's the deal with Suho? The rest of the things I understood as the idea went along, because otherwise, there’s nothing to feel from what you see, and I don’t accept the excuse that “They have limited time, they couldn’t do it.” Then just take it easy and don’t do anything or show me only the important parts in detail.
Seriously, this anime is filler and the animation is mediocre, but you can watch it to see how it is.
K-drama: 9/10
Webtoon: 7/10
Anime: 5/10
I will give it a mix in hopes that at least the boys' part is done well, but I think it’s going to be a joke. I will most likely change to not recommend. I’m going to rewatch the K-drama and erase from my memory what a trash character Lim Jugyeong is while hoping that Seojun gets the happiness he deserves.(I’m not considering the side stories.) Suho remains cool anyway.
