Ore wa Subete wo "Parry" suru: Gyaku Kanchigai no Sekai Saikyou wa Boukensha ni Naritai

MAL really needs to add a "Dumb/Dense Protagonist" tag so I can avoid shows like this.

Before, we had shows where the MC would never have to do anything and they'd come across some cheat powers. Now, the meta has shifted to MCs finally training hard to become strong, but the catch is that they lose all their intellect in the process so you end up with a main protagonist who just lives in his own world and has 0 self-awareness.

The gist of the show goes like this, MC strong but he thinks he's weak. Everyone else is weak and thinks the MC is strong. Endless ... frustrating misunderstandings every episode because communication is not an option and MC can't add 1 to 1 together. This formula would be fine in a comedy show but despite the title of this show it tries to be a serious show so it just ends up being annoying to watch.

I only gave it the 3 episodes rule so maybe the MC will eventually wake up and regain his lost intellect, but he's been such a parry god that he's parried me out from watching.

Noor's sheer stupidity is maddening. Despite his obvious power, he remains clueless about his abilities. This lack of self-awareness isn't endearing; it's rage inducing. Watching Noor struggle to understand his own strength is a test of patience, and his character fails to develop throughout the series. The anime's excessive use of recaps is another major issue. Every episode spends too much time rehashing previous events, which drags down the pacing and makes the series feel stagnant. The storyline has potential. The action scenes are decent. However, these positives are often overshadowed by Noor's frustrating behavior and the repetitive recaps. The first episode was quite ... interesting, but it fell off extremely by Noor being an idiot. If you can handle such annoying main character give it a go.

Though for serious, for it's first three episodes of it's lifespan, it's produced quite a promising product, and only time will tell if it actually parrys itself into a decent and solid product overall. It's not without it's hiccups though, that is for sure. Let me explain.

Story and characters: 6
The story can really make itself stand out as different compared to how others of this particular power fantasy genre go about things. Instead of simply being better cause we're gifted. How about we train instead? Work for it all? It's quite a refreshing take which does ... deserve some credit, along with the start seemingly signaling that if he wants to get any where, he'll have to work for it.

Who is he might you ask? We have Noor. The sane village idiot. Though while he isn't a complete stupid character, but more that there is more likely gaps within his logic. Which could be down to his up bringing if anything. Which he can't be faulted with in fairness. However it does leave some questioning moments throughout the show. The biggest annoyance for me, is more how seemingly while he could think things aren't going his way, but almost all other character seemingly make it so, as if he's some chosen one that deserves all the spotlight and everything handed to him on a silver platter. It's not bad, but it can come across as a bit one dimensional if left unchallenged by it.

The story itself is nice, but wouldn't stand out and call it ground breaking, or super engaging. It's solid don't get me wrong, but unless a major twist happens, then it might come into some struggles in enjoyment as we go along.

Art and sound: 7
This part I have zero issues with really. You can see throughout the training moments, how everything flows and is animated nicely. It's not a breathtaking style, but it certainly does it's job,and does it's job well. Matched with a good solid sound department, that really make it out for what it is. A solid product overall.

I might've parried too much harshness into this pre review, but it's mainly what I got from the first few episodes. For the record, Parry isn't a bad show at all. More just solid, will be enjoyable, and that can work for a number of people. Give it a try, and see how you think.

Mentally challenged middle-aged man goes around and experiences things for the first time. Ooh, look a frog. Ooh a goblin. Oooh, a carriage ride in the middle of the fields. Aaah, oooh, eeeh. This pretty much sums up the behavior of main character, his complete lack of ability to think and lack of experience when it comes to common things. Most importantly lack of self-awareness.

He keeps jumping into every situation without a second of a thought while at the same thinking he's the weak one and everyone else is strong, even though he keeps besting everyone and people keep praising him and giving him rewards. ... Somehow king giving a reward to which everyone objects to is not an indication it's a special reward. Naah, must be shovel for shit, which king conveniently keeps above his throne. Weird habit I suppose. This kind of broken logic works, for entire episode, maybe two. Not half of the season. We are almost half-way through and he's still a meat stick that just reacts to things. And reactions are dull and boring.

In fact none of the characters make you invested in this show. Things happen but without any consequences. Nor do you have history on any of the characters apart from simplistic, almost animal-like, behavior patterns... he saved me, must follow until end of time.

The rest of the aspects are nothing worth praising either. Art is fine until there's an action scene in which they just decide to skip most of the fights or animate whole two frames. At least they had enough self-awareness for him not to keep yelling "parry, parry, parry", like some other shows this season are doing.

Overall it's boring. Nothing to see here. There are no well choreographed battles or stunning vistas. There's no great music or great acting. Things are there, inoffensive but boring and average. It might be okay show to kill the time or have something play in background, but not worth waiting for weekly releases and dedicating my time to it. Might finish it later, but I honestly doubt.

I want to play a bit of a devil's advocate here and tell you why this is not an unwatchable garbage, as many reviewers claim, but rather a very watchable garbage.

The main problem of this show lies in the failure to properly communicate the main characteristic of our MC beforehand on the author's part.

The MC is retarded. I mean it not as profanity but as a medical condition. Like Forrest Gump the hero of this story lives in his own world and deserves pity. He has an intellectual disability. It is shown many times that what is common knowledge and basic logic to many ... is an enigma to him. Instead, he makes his warped irrational assumptions about everything without even realising it.

And if you approach this show from this angle, everything starts to make a lot of sense and the show becomes a good thing to binge-watch in the evening after work while having a meal.

Our character is unable to learn any complex skills (he is retarded), but he has an insane will, drive, and obsession to train, doing it over and over (you know why) with no thought. But because of his obsession and him being naturally gifted, he achieves insane strength. But lacks the self-awareness to realize that and never stops training.

The show, of course, is goofy with its comedic situations of how clueless MC's actions and motivations are misinterpreted by other people, but it is not that bad. There is no gag humor, no fanservice, no isekai bullshit with the mc rambling about how great ramen is, or some other Japanese crap. Apart from the silly premise, the show takes itself seriously.

Btw people die in this show and monsters explode into a gory mess. Not what you usually expect from a silly show, so that's a big plus too.

Bottomline if the show`s title was "Retarded Hero" or something along these lines I think many people would enjoy it.

A lot of people want to pan this show because of the MC being dense, but that’s not actually the issue here. Noor has been secluded and hardly educated his entire life until 14 when he was left on his own to do nothing but training for a decade, the guy has no reason to know damn near anything at all except for how to tend to animals and whatever odd jobs he picked up. Him being a complete oblivious idiot is expected given the setting.

The problem is that so is everyone else.

Adventurer’s guild: the guild has a policy of ranking capability simply by what ... skills someone has, with no apparent assessment aside from that (or even any confirmation of stated abilities - Noor could just lie to these people and be some SSS-class adventurer but he’s too dumb to do that). The guild master and everyone who works with Noor are constantly shown his abilities and just take it as “guess he’s a strong fellah” or something; word never gets around that this guy can carry tons of bricks all day without sweating.

The royal family: Noor literally saves the princess’s life by slaying a mutant Minotaur and doesn’t even get a formal recognition of achievement. The whole schtick could have been alleviated with a simple “For the grand achievement of slaying the demon…” or whatever but no. I could almost understand it from a position of good old-fashioned aristocratic condescension in forgoing formalities with the common man but the king didn’t know who he was beforehand. In fact, Noor wasn’t on anybody’s radar despite being a one-man any-job-you-want-done crew.

The people: Noor carries around the treasure of the country (the very distinct “sword”) and nobody recognizes it at all or says anything.

The princess: the final nail in the coffin, and the most damning. The princess forgets to speak aloud when naming dangerous monsters, refuses to actively acknowledge Noors abilities, and has taken to thinking “he must have sensed it even then!” and other such drivel the likes of which you get out of fanatical followers of characters like Shadow and Ains, without any of the irony.

It’s one thing to have an oblivious dumbass MC who doesn’t know their strength, but it’s as if every event and line of dialogue is crafted perfectly to maintain his ignorance of the situation. It is frustrating, and nothing else. It is not funny, and if you disagree just keep watching because unless it changes it’ll get old for you too unless you’re content getting to Ep 12 - “I parry any chance at a second season”

Also while the skills are interesting and the concept is good the action really isn’t there, you see a character jump and then the reaction of the enemy, that kind of “action.”

I can’t wait till Gaile the Cursificer gets the anime treatment cause at least the other people in that world aren’t as lead-dense as that tasteless dickhead.

TL;DR no Noor never finds out he’s any good.

I’ll keep it short, should you watch? Yes. But I’ll explain why I would recommend something I would give such a low score to.

Noor may well be the most oblivious/stupid MC I have “EVER” seen.

This anime has all the potential to be a real master piece. The elements of the story 9/10. Animation 8/10. Action Scenes 8/10.

But BRO!!… It’s insane someone can be that stupid and literally spend their entire life training for it. It’s like spending your whole life ... trying to be an astronaut, then asking what the sun is……

I’ll probably change my score if he gets a couple brain cells.

This show revolves around MC not being aware of how insanely strong he has gotten after dedicating years of hard training to perfecting the basic skills he has.

Every episode is spent around "misunderstandings" that go like this:
- MC does insane stuff
- Everyone is in awe at MC doing insane stuff
- Everyone tells MC hes doing insane stuff
- MC denies reality insisting that he is weak
Rinse and repeat.
The dialogue is written to further these misunderstandings in a way that makes you want to hit your head against a wall.
You know how in many Anime a single sentence could clear up everything? This is ... that but it's the entire premise of the show.

I don't know if it's supposed to be funny? I didnt see a comedy tag. It's just incredibly frustrating and aggravating to watch.

According to manga readers this continues on throughout the entire season which is why I dropped it after 3 episodes.

Maybe give it the 3 episode rule and see if you dont mind the below room temp IQ MC.

This show can't decide if it's a serious fantasy-action drama, or a comedic OP protagonist send-up.

What we have an OP protagonist fantasy, with an oblivious protagonist, which means this should be a comedy, right? Except this is all played completely straight-faced, and the larger story developing is very serious and high-stakes for everyone. But throughout all of this, our protagonist is oblivious to just to the danger he's in; how powerful he is; and what is really going on all around him. The thing is, Noor (the protag) isn't Forrest Gump: he does not have below-average intelligence making him see things in an overly simplistic ... way; rather, no one around him ever states the obvious thing like "holy crap dude, you just soloed an S-rank monster!"

This is where my frustration comes in: there's no reason for the protagonist to be this oblivious to his own power level for as long as he is; and there is no reason why no one points out to him just how incredible his accomplishments are. Quite simply, no one does the most obvious thing, and we're never given a reason for it. Noor's lack of confidence is the underlying cause of his obliviousness, but the thing is that lack of confidence radiates from him, so absolutely no one with half a brain is going to mistake that obliviousness for arrogance. Simply, the show needs a real reason that no one ever says "holy crap dude, you just soloed an S-rank monster!" to him, but never provides one (arguably the princess character eventually does have a reason, but it simply cannot be applied to everyone he encounters and she would not have had that reason when first encountering him).

Beyond that admittedly big problem the show has, there's actually a very intriguing plot about a war between two nations, and how Noor has gotten caught up in it. I'll also add, Noor doesn't seem so much like he's OP per se, but rather that everyone around him is simply under leveled in a world that seems to be balanced around his power level. Plus, OLM is going all out with the animation on this one: definitely one of the best looking shows of the season. If the show just dropped the oblivious to his own power thing and pushed on as a straight-up fantasy-action story, my current rating of 6 would jump to 8 easily; in that regard it's not the most original thing out there, but it's well done enough that it's worth your time.

The title of the show tells you everything you need to know.
It's very much NOT an exaggeration.
The MC DOES parries everything.
Including a brain.

It's very hard for me to write a review not laced with profanities in this case, so just trust me when I say it is very much not recommended.

And if you dislike the "dense MC" trope, this one is a walking black hole.

And it honestly seems like the rest of the characters are also masters of parrying just like the MC, and they all parried common sense and their brains.
... The FMC ABSOLUTELY REFUSES to end the misunderstandings the MC experiences.
There is absolutely no chemistry between the characters, the interaction feel forced and stiff.

Animation is meh.

Long story short:
Don't recommend.

If you need a chill fun show to pass time, this is it. It doesn't have any real depth or complexity, it's only supposed to be entartaining and give you that one crumb of dopamine in the moment. Contrary to other reviews I actually like the MC, he's made to be dense as a plot device/comedic gag, the joke is mostly "idk how strong I really am!!" so get ready to see it in every episode lol but it does make sense in the context, since he lived isolated from others and never mastered any high tier skills.
Now hold on, I'm not about to ... psychoanalyse this chara but stay with me, he's not retarded but autistic:
- Doesn't understand social cues/subtext/nuance
- Repetitive actions and one track-mind when he finds something interesting (the poison, the skills from each school)
- Did everything in a pattern and never changed his routine of training
- Doesn't understand hierarchy (he does know she's the daughter of the king! he just sees the king as a father figure to her and not as a higher standing person because people with autism usually see everyone as equals / don't understand authority that well unless exposed to it frequently)
- Draws his own straight-forward conclusions, because 'common sense' is not actually intuitive to everyone. If someone said 'this guy is hella strong, NO ONE can beat him' he'll take it literally, and because he knows he's only a low rank but still beats him - the logical conclusion is that the 'strong' guy went easy on him. It really makes sense imo and he's consistently written to act like this so I have no problems with the mc's personality.

At first I thought MC was just being humble but the more I watched I realized that MC is just stupid, the story itself was not that bad but the world building is little bit confusing and the worst about this anime is MC keeps misunderstanding everything like when fighting strong enemies and talking to other characters.

The only thing I can respect is his hard work in training and the other characters is okay if you asking me

First impressions when reading the title? It reminds me of Cuphead because of "Parry" and immediately, my mind thinks it is gonna be a show where the MC only knows how to use the parry skill to solve every obstacle that comes along the way.

This is a show with a plot that has been done a thousand times before, using the age old concept that is based on the famous Bruce Lee quote: "I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times." where we follow a protagonist who thinks he's ... weak because he only trained in the basic skills, but in reality, is very powerful because of his hard work to hone the basics over years of practice.

The MC is probably the make or break factor for most people - the MC's upbringing has resulted in him in being completely oblivious to social norms. For me, I enjoyed watching the MC's reactions when interacting with people that stems from his upbringing, constantly thinking that he's weak and he needed improvement while sending a message to the viewers that humility and hard work overcomes arrogance and inherent skills.

Overall, it is a very simple and straightforward show, and that is exactly what I like to watch - sometimes, the simplest shows are the best shows, just like how in the show itself, the basic parry skill, can be honed and perfected to be as effective, or even more effective, than complex skills.

I started watching this, expecting just some anime slop with a funny gimmick, and with the novelty of having an older protagonist.

Instead what I got was a story that has clearly no love or even thought put into it, in every episode there are at least 5 things about either the world building or the character's actions that makes absolutely no sense.
Not only that this show contorts itself just to keep this terrible "Im strong but I dont know that I am" trope, and its just so forced, contrived, and BORING. The world has absolutely nothing special about it, things characters say are immediatly contradicted ... by their actions (not because of deceit or anything just first draft writing), and it seems liek every idea presented is executed in perhaps the most boring way possible.

Also they gave the guy who can only parry a sword instead of a shield, because that might've racked their brains too much with a glimpse of originality

I know everyone's been making this joke but the only thing the main character parries more than swords is my interest

Could've been okay, ends up being terrible.

Basic premise: We've got a classic MC weakling who can only use the weakest spells/moves so he trained those 'till he became OP.
This could have been one of those okay generic 6/10 OP MC stories of which we get 5 a season. Decent enough to kill some time but, you'll forget it ever existed the moment it ends.
Instead of that they went with the whole misunderstanding trope where everyone but the MC notices he's completely overpowered, but he keeps misunderstanding and thinks he's weak. And they're keeping it going all through the season.

It's simply bad and lazy ... writing, nothing more. I regret waiting 6 episodes to drop it.

The biggest reason this anime falls into the fantasy genre isn't just the magic or monsters, but the fact that a healthy human so dense and oblivious as the MC is unrealistic. This trait is shared by many of the characters around him, making it a recurring theme. I must also correct the anime's assertion that the MC has only one strong skill (parry): he and the other characters possess an exceptionally advanced ability to "Jump to Wrong Conclusions"—some are so talented at it, they miss the mark by a mile.
That said, the plot is intriguing, and the MC is likeable. The side characters are ... not too shallow, and the skill system is reasonable. I also found the portrayal of how the MC got stronger quite interesting. The anime could be a lot of fun to watch, but it feels like the writers either lacked creativity or took the easy way out. The MC didn’t need to be so oblivious to justify the plot. I could see myself giving it a 7/10 if the dumb trope is toned down in future episodes, though it had the potential to be an 8/10.

When I first hear about this anime, I was really hyped. Like he's really really strong but not that overpowered and he trained hard for that. But the fact that he's so f*cking dumb really makes it so frustrating and tiring.
I'm willing to admit that he's ignorant on some points because he's lived alone in the woods for 10 years but , c'mon, even the other characters are of no use. The only potentially useful character is the guild master but even when he can help/give information, the storyline is f*cked up.

Couldn't get past the 4th episode, very big disappointment.

It's watchable, but not very good. Characters are too unsophisticated and feel kind of flat, too many things are conveniently misunderstood, the MC is frustratingly dense and stupid. Other than that - this is your typical power fantasy, with decent animation and decent fight scenes, it doesn't bring much new to the table. There's a lot better stuff to watch out there, for example if you haven't watched Solo Leveling it kinda fits in the same bracket but does things alot better. I picked this up because this season is a bit of a drought to my tastes, but uhh... its aight to pass the ... time I guess. To sum it up... it's just very mid.

If you are interested in this anime for the action and fantasy tag then I suggest you read the synopsis again. Especially the second sentence. Yep, althought it "is" an action anime the story itself is more into comedy instead. But don't go away just yet, because the actual action itself is pretty good the studio sure did good work adapting this one. Well with all that said let's get into the actual review.

Story and characters: 8
The story follows Noor a seemingly failure for an adventurer since he can only learn some skills and none of it is ... considered essential to become a true adventurer. It takes refreshing view of a failure trying to train his hardest to become strong enough to finally start his step on adventuring. The thing is, apparently every character follow each of their own common sense and always fail to convey whatever they are trying to say. And the result of that is how flow of story keep being "parried" where the most tense moment even turning comedic. This anime really need that comedy tag.

Sounds and music: 7
Nothing feel miss but nothing stands out either. Basically the where it sounds just right it feels pleasant and convey the correct mood to the audience but still not to the point of being swept away by it. Not bad indeed.

Art: 8
Being adapted from light novel it could be expected to contain a lot of dialog but thankfully it is not all stiff in this anime. Some sequence with no dialog at all drawn well with beautiful scenery accompanying it. All fighting scenes shown so far also pretty thrilling and fluid giving a good experience to watch.

This pre-review is definitely so biased and could be disagreed with but the show is definitely not a bad one so give it a try and see for yourself.

While I am not a fan of long titles, I have liked this anime.

The main character dreams of being an adventurer, however while trying everything he can in various schools, he can only learn the most basic of skills and is rejected.

Does that stop him? The dude spends a decade mastering his basic skills and training like a champ on his own. He has no idea how powerful he has become, but he ends up helping and besting people well beyond what he thinks is possible.

The humble and hard-working MC is pretty awesome. The story and plot have yet to deepen, but I find ... this fun to watch despite that.

Out of many animes this season, this is one of the few I try to watch right away!

If you want something fun with a smooth progression and pacing, this anime will be something you enjoy.
